For such a price, forget about chinese toys...
But Warco style lathes (the same as Bernardo and Hollzmann) have DC brush motors, the worst that you can have especially on belt driven spindles, they have no torque in low rpm range. People convert them to 3ph with an inverter and sooner or later you will have to do it to get more comfort. Knowing this its better to buy a conventional gear belt/gear driven one and just apply a stronger brand 1ph motor. Of course variable speed is an asset here but without low rpm torq, it will make things difficult. But this model as I see is an old style one, with a classic belt/gear drive and no DC electronics, hardly better if you must change the belts to achieve desired speeds... http://www.glue-it.com/model-engineering/tools/lathes/warcowm240b.html#.Vo193LbhDOE
and you may be right about boxfords, but it is all about where you stand...
I had a look at MM lathes when I was looking and was not impressed. Bought a Myford ml 7 for less money with more tooling and a milling attachment. It's still worth at least what I paid for it (not that I would sell) and it way outperforms the cheep Chinese stuff.
Keep looking on eBay or Gumtree and something will turn up.
...patience is key to finding a lathe..
Or do what I did - "A LATHE! THERE'S A LATHE ON EBAY AND IT'S ONLY 20 MILES AWAY AND IT'S STILL SITTING AT £100!!!"
My motto is now; impulse buys should not weigh 300KG...
Yeah I did that but it was more like a 600mile round trip.....
That's kinda what some (many?) of the cheapnese lathe manufacturers did and is a large part of what makes the Clarke toy so horrible. Increase the swing/centre height and everything else needs to be exponentially bigger/heavier to have the stiffness & mass neededIf I had a myford (first thing I would do is sell it, get something custom made with the £5000 profit..) second thing I would (if I had to use it) do is pin and bolt a 4" block of cast iron between headstock and bed.

yeah my myford is dated and stamped on the machine bed so would come in handy if there was a site that saved lathe bed stamps somewhere at least if it got stolen they would be some way of getting it back again due to the stamp on the lathe at least it could be traceable to a degree
