Originally they would have done so, just as many of the lathes now in people's back sheds did.

At the moment, 123hotchef does not himself have the equipment to determine the thread specification. Someone with different equipment will be able to do so. Hence the advice not to throw it away.

This one is more than capable of doing the job and is quite a long way from "thousands":

Using an onscreen ruler (PMeter), based on the shank measurement after the thread, of 16.65mm, this measures on the screen at 113 pixels, giving a scaling factor of: 0.1473451327mm/pixel (this factor will depend on screen resolution and any zoom applied to the image).

Based on the bit after the thread being 16.65mm = 113pix

Thread OD = 107pix = 15.766mm (15.875mm = 5/8")

Thread pitch: 4 threads = 43pix = 6.3358mm so thread pitch = 1.584mm

Equating to 16.035 TPI (so, near enough 16TPI)

Looks like it might be a 5/8 - 16UN unified thread.

Crickey - I've never needed more than pitch gauges and some way of measuring the diameters - and before I had the gauges, didn't have too much trouble counting TPI - although with old(er) eyes I would now.

See @123hotchef its really simple, just spend money on a tool costing hundreds to save some money on filters

You do have a lathe, cutting a thread on a bit of scrap would at least satisfy your curiosity.
