Clarke 160Tm

Hi Guys,

im after a lot of advice, im completely new to all of this welding, I've only ever had a little go and im after a welder for my project Mini Clubman, I have completely restored most of the parts of my Mini apart from the shell which is the last part I have to Finnish however it seems I have my hands full and a lot of the shell has rusted away so I need a decent welder which can be connected into the refillable bottles as I have heard a lot of welding can cost more using the disposables (correct me if im wrong please) please could people advise me if the Clarke 160Tm is the right welder for the job and what sort of gas I need, sorry if I haven't included any information please ask anything you need to know, Im not looking to buy this just yet as money is hard to come by when your 17 so shall have to save for this but im looking forward to learning to weld, any help is much appreciated

Hi Tom and welcome to the forum.

The 160 is a very capable machine and will certainly do what you require of it with some to spare, however if money is a bit tight, the smaller Clarkes will also do the job well, but obviously you wont have many spare amps if you want to do anything heavier.

The gas...it's classed as 95% argon 5% Co2....you could use Co2 on its own which is cheaper but not as nice to use and a bit more difficult to get away with, especially on the thin stuff.

Thanks for the offer but unfortunately the money is not around at the moment and thank you for the advice now I know what gas im after, I have seen the smaller Clarke machines but I was drawn to this one because it comes with the regulator for the bottles and they can mount on the back of the welder making it easier to move round I guess, I looked on machine mart but couldn't find the 160 do they not sell it?

I very recently bought a 160TM for similar jobs to yours and I'm loving it.

If you look on the machine mart site you will see all the welders they sell including the 160TM.

Where abouts are you based?

Thank you for the link, and the help guys and im based in a small town called Burntwood near Lichfield the nearest machine mart is quite a drive so going to have to wait till I got the money and ill go and take a look
