I've just bought my first MIG welder, a Clarke 150 TE and wondered if it can be used gasless, just till I get some practice in! The set has a gas canister and a large roll of wire and is ready to go but just wondered if it can go gasless too.
If you can I would suggest that you just use co2 to practice with. The gas less wire leaves a messy result. I use argon mix and I find even learning it helps to make it just that little bit easier.
the 150TE does not do gas less you would need the 150EN. Basically the polarity is switched for gas less which the 150TE can't do.
I was beginning to think along those lines myself after reading quite a few posts in this Forum. I wasn't too sure about the welder being gas only until I downloaded the Manual for it tonight and of course you really put me right too. I have read of some folks using pub CO2 bottles and could try that except I have no 'local', doing all my drinking at home!!
I'll buy a bottle of CO2 and have a blast at it tomorrow, if I can find some thin car metal to work with.
Thanks again.
Bob.
Another stupid question! Can the bottle that came with the welder be changed without losing the gas or can it not re-seal itself when the regulator is removed? If I can't change it I'll just have to learn with the Argon/co2 first!
If you can use a thicker metal to trial on as it will save you blowing holes, for the same money try the co2/argon mix as this will give you cleaner welds. I am still using throw away bottles and they do last me quite a while but its used for a hobby and not every day, however I will be going for full size bottles.
I would try a thickness of 2mm first as this will help you with control and then get thinner metal later
All the bottles I have taken off have not let the gas out however I have had some bad valves which do not flow correctly. At first try more gas or follow the clarke guide on settings as its not bad or even that far out.
The bottle on the rig is 110Ltr argon/co2 I'll probably do as you say and get in some practice as it is, I read a lot of the folk on the forum fit an extra fan, as a hobby welder would this be needed? I do have some welding jobs in mind and one is on a near new silencer, as a garage mechanic at one time I would never ever weld an exhaust but this one is brand new and heavy, good quality metal so I'm going to give it a try myself.
You should be OK without the fan as you have a turbo model. I do quite a lot of thin sheet welding and some thicker gauge and have not needed a bigger fan, I am using the 151TE
is the silencer MS or SS? as I am sure you know for SS you need a different wire and pure argon.
Just the MS but I'm thinking of puting a flexi join in and it will be SS but some are sold for clamping on and some for welding on and hopefully the latter will have MS end tubes but I have to find that out first.
I manged to download the Clarke 150 TE manual and it has a section on metals, gas and wire requirements and settings but it'll be a while maybe before I get past the mild steel stage! All my past welding on car bodies was with Oxy/Acetylene and some Arc welding on heavier stuff.
