That semiconductor looks knackered to me. At the very top where the tab meets the plastic body there is a fracture in the plastic, this could well be where the smoke got out. Difficult to diagnose remotely but if it was mine, I'd be removing the component and testing it - but I've got the gear for testing it. You're probably stuck unless you can find someone local to test that component. If you have put it in back to front, you will have pumped too much power into the Gate pin and this almost certainly will have fried it.
There are more tests that can be done but I'm afraid that we're at the level where the board needs removing and proper diagnosis needs doing. It's not a write off but it's not something that can be fixed easily by somebody without the necessary tooling and background.
