Clarke 120E upgrade. MOT quality welding ?

Hi chaps. I have a 120E. had it for years. trouble mainly was with duty cycle and wire feed sticking. ... so I have upgraded it. not tested yet. I have a lot of riley 1500 chassis to put back together.

Better to post photos rather than links to videos Steve, it's almost impossible to comment without being able to see it properly.

if the weld had penetrated both pieces of steel and they are not falling off or loose anywhere then it will pass just make sure you fully weld the repairs as opposed to and inch here and there as that would fail

My friend has a Riley 1.5 in his collection. He is very kindly loaning it to me to take to the Goodwood Revival in a fortnight. I have borrowed it before and it's a pleasure to drive. If I didn't have enough vehicles already I would be sorely temped by one.

Just had a look at your video, the welds ' sure ain't perty' but they look like they are doing what they are supposed to do which is join 2 bits of metal together.
Looks to be an OK standard from an MOT point of view.

Thanks. Hopefully my welding will improve.

120E should now be able to do better. Last time the 120E overheated just as the metal was getting hot enough for me to weld more easily. I suspect the liner was done for as I'd left old wire in it which had rusted.

Riley 1500s are a bit of a pain cos they rust from the inside out sometimes (box sections). But it'll be good when I get it going. Even better if they change the MOT rule and advance it to 1965 or so..but still need to make the car safe.

Need to get some sheet metal. (1mm for bodywork? thicker for box sections).

I would use 1.2mm for the bodywork, that way you can direct most of the heat onto the thicker new material and 'drift' onto the thinner original steel.

Thanks chaps. I will get some 1.2 sheet then ! I normally start by striking arc with newer metal, 'cos I suspect I'll blow a hole in the old stuff. probably better to cut back to the good stuff anyway. (if there is any!).
