Clarke 100en Gas welder help!!!

Newbie MIG welder help!!!

I have just bought a working Clarke 100en welder. It uses gas and I bought it to do some work on the car body of my current project. It works but it needs a new tip (0.6mm I think). What settings should I use for the welding about 1.2mm for repair patches? What also do I set the gas tap on the bottle to? It goes up to 8 I think. Please repond!

hi mate try a test piece first on diferent settings until it suits you getting good penetration without blowing holes on a big bottle i set it to 10litres per min but as far as im aware on disposable bottles you open the tap fully

Maybe a starting point if you don't have one. Otherwise, use the tutorials on here to set it up. If you are using disposable gas, then turn the reg up to full.

I am, finding that the wire is CONSTANTLY getting kinked in the feed and getting imnto a mess at the wirefeed and tensioner area, meaning I have to always pull the wire through from the tourch, and that means wasting all the wire that was in the torch and tube leading up to it. This is getting EXTREMLEY frustrating (and expensive!), and I was wondering if it is becasue the tip is slighly further out than the shroud, and is gettting burnt. Is there any solution? A longer shroud, a shorther tip? Oh, and the threading is getting poor in the gun bit where thge tip screws into. Where can I get a new one from?

Other than probable lack of experience on your part, your torch might also want a service.
New liner, tip and swan neck spring if it has one.
One of the more common causes of 'birdsnesting' at the wirefeed rollers is that when the liner gets worn the wire starts to drag in the liner so the common 'remedy' is to wind the tensioner down tighter, this means that in the event of a burnback the rollers will keep driving the wire rather than slip.

Also is the start of the liner after the rollers too far from the rollers? Best to get it as close as possible as this can help stop the birdnesting too. The wire goes straight off the rollers into the liner then.

i found using a 0.8mm tip with 0.6mm wire helps with that

Is there a 'power' setting on a normal gas MIG welder, or is there just wirespeed and gas, like mine? Can someone explain what a power setting is?

Doesn't the 100EN have switches marked "1", "2", "Min", "Max", etc.?
If so, these are the voltage setting, which many call the "power" setting.
The "power" setting on a MIG actually sets the voltage. Power, voltage and current are inter-related so the overall power and current depend on the voltage setting, the wire speed and wire diameter.

1) This is not right the tip should NOT extend past the shroud. Check that the tip or shroud is right for machine, or grind/file tip down so that it sits about 3/5mm below shroud.
2) I personally have never had great success with 0.6mm wire, the minimum size I will use is 0.8mm, check if the rollers will take that size and if they do try 0.8 wire. I weld motorcycle petrol tanks with 0.8 wire and as long as you take your time and build up lots of spot welds it is fine for really thin sheet.

That is probably dependent on the welder. I get good results from 0.6mm wire on fairly thin sheet and reports on here suggest that Clarke models would behave similarly.

As BillJ has stated 0.6 wire might work fine on smaller mig welders, I have used mostly larger machines and can't comment on your particular welder however the tip should not stick out further than the shroud full stop and this is not "dependent on the welder"
