Clark LC 430 Lathe

Hi all. My lathe ( It was gifted) has decided it doesn't want to play anymore. The problem is the motor, when the start button is pressed the motor rocks back and forth as though its trying to rotate, I've tried turning the chuck by hand and it will rotate slowly. The motor also makes a buzzing when it's trying to play. I reckon the motor is shot (maybe I over loaded It drilling a 4 mm hole in brass bar ) but my knowledge of electremicals is very limited. Clark don't stock the motors as that model lathe went out of production 3 years ago. I've tried trawling the net but gave up. Any suggestions/help greatly excepted. I'll prob end up binning the lot. What's under the cover to the right of the image? The chances are it's a capacitor, which might need replacing.

I had the cap checked and was told it was ok . I forgot to mention it in the post.

Does the motor turn freely with the belt removed? If you try to start the motor by hand only do it with the belt removed.

It certainly sounds like an issue with the start circuit. Is there a reversing switch on the lathe?

From that service manual ...... Hmmm, I can't make much sense of that. Some more pictures of the connections etc might help

A little explanation.
Single phase induction motors need a start winding to get things going, It's the relative polarities of the main (Run) winding and start winding that defines which way the motor will run.
A forward/reverse switch will swap the relative polarities of the two windings so a faulty direction switch might mean that only one winding is being energised.

It doesn't have a reversing switch. Most electremicals are Klingon to me but I will have a go at the basics. Found a comp in Grimsby that's going to give it the once over.
