circlips and eclips

hi every one
this might sound like a daft question but how do you know what size clips to order?
i have a shaft 9mm in diameter i want to put an E clip onto so what size E clip would i need?
does the size stated on the clips represent the diameter of the recess they clip into?
it all seems very confusing to me

I am almost certain circlips go by shaft dia so I would imagine E clips are the same.

Cheap enough just buy a set with a range of sizes, for each style of circlip.

according to that chart a 9mm circlip has an unstressed diameter of 7.63, quite amazing how much they open out!

i did think to do that but i really dont use circlips very often and wanted to know the principle behind working out the size of the right ones
its to go on the back of these pin guide i made for the rear seats of my car.
hasnt got to be perfect but just wanted to know

If you snapped a circlip to the Earth so that it was tight around the entire planet and then ping it open by say a foot...

It would lift off the surface by a couple of inches, all the way around the entire 25 thousand mile circumference...

I find it interesting when the fundamental geometry of this universe reveals itself in unexpected ways. We take it for granted and accept it as "normal" that if you double the size of a thing, it's volume increases eight times but the surface area only goes up by four.

It wouldn't, it would go ping & disappear into outer space before you ever got it fitted.
