Cincinnati drill

or... to be more precise Cincinnati Lyon Chomienne drill.
5mm drilling capacity, with speed from 440 to 18000.
Originally it had 3 phase 440V motor (I think) 0.25 kW.

Now it needs new motor (and I need advice, please).
I am assuming that 1 phase motor will be larger and heavier than original? and my best course of action is small 3 phase motor with VFD to run it?

yes that's probably right but not significantly, I presume you will go for a single pole pair motor approx 2,800 rpm? A vfd is useful (that's what I use on my miller, saves swapping belts so often). Incidentally the 18,000 must be a mistype, that will need a very large pulley looking at the driven pulley for a >6:1 step up?

Just had a look on interweb and it seems I can get both 3 phase and 1 phase motors with 63 frame and .25kW
If I go for 1 phase, I have a choice of "capacitor start" ve " capacitor run".
I am assuming that, since the drill starts "no load", I should choose "capacitor run" ???

1 phase motor is more expensive that 3 phase, but by the time you add VFD, 1 phase is cheaper (and I have no need for variable speed - swapping of the belt is easy and quick)

No, it's not mistype - both motor and spindle pulley are fitted on identical tapers and secured with L/H double nuts.
To achieve full range of speed, you swap motor and spindle pulleys:

25mm/160mm=0.15625 * 2800 = 438 rpm
160mm/25mm=6.4 * 2800 = 17920 rpm
and (obviously) 8 speeds inbetween

That drill was probably originally designed for drilling small high tolerance holes maybe in pcb prototypes of something similar.

The speeds I am quoting are as originally from the factory - btw they are still making modern day versions of these drills in France:

My plan is to use 4 pole instead of 2 pole motor and therefore halve the rpm range to much more usable (but still very respectable) 220/9000 rpm.

And the finished job (including new flat belt):

In the end opted for 3 phase 4 pole motor and an inverter drive.
It was only slightly more expensive than 1 phase motor.
Very happy with the end result, lovely little drill.
This photo btw shows the drill in high speed configuration.
Lower speeds are available by swapping the pulleys around.

Welcome aboard If you get the number off the old one, any belt supplier will be able to match it for you.

We'd be interested to see your progress with the restoration.

I am sure there are other sources...
I didn't have the number of the old one, plus changing the motor changed the length anyway, so had to order by length and width.

That does indeed look very similar (slightly larger?).
Lovely machines, very good quality.
The only surprise (in my case) turned out to be spindle taper, being B10 (DIN ISO 239).
