Chuck off ?

Quick question just trying to remove the chuck on my AEG cordless drill , removed the retaining screw inside , but does anyone know wether the chuck is threaded right or left handed , i reckon rh thread so it doesnt try to undoo when in forward direction ?

Last one I had apart was a right hand thread chuck.

Normally lefthand retaining screw, but righthand on the chuck itself.

I normally put an allenkey in the chuck, and give it a clout with a mallet if its tight.

Every chuck I've taken off portable drills has been right hand thread. The retaining screw has always been left hand.

Aye cheers guys , cant get to shift tho i thought hitch's trick with the allen key would work but its chuffin tight , i dont want to strip the gears or anything . guess its strip it right down so it can be held in a vice or send it to the repair shop .
its a cracking drill too , well apart from the chuck that wont close up fully !

Have you tried soaking the chuck itself in oil, and winding back and forth a few times? Might be able to save it yet....

I normally find getting the retaining screw out is the hardest bit!

Have you tried gallons of WD40, I had this once after drilling masonry.
Soaked it in the stuff, spun it open and as far shut as it would go millions of times, left it standing chuck side down and it came back to life. has it got a spindle lock? my dewalt has and that might avoid knackering the gears.

TO BE honest my drills do tend to get used quite hard some might say abused . tapping holes etc not just driving a few screws in to pine like a chippie might
so im not surprised its tight ,ill get my wd 40 out and fill the chuck leave it a day or two to soak , chers guys

I've had the same with a chuck. Very slowly closed less and less until it got to the point where it wouldnt grip a 5mm bit.
I left it soaking in oil for a week, then did the opening/closing hundreds of times method. Also gave it a few smacks on the bench which helped no end. I try to avoid removing chucks

Can't beat the allen key method, use the biggest one that will fit in the chuck, be brave. Give it a sharp smack with a hammer. Never had it fail yet or damaged any drills,

If the chuk youre removing is knackered the trick is to shock it off put the dill flat on a bench support the gearbox collar and whack the chuck in an anticlock wise direction. Just the initial few thou of shocked movement will do the trick then spin it off by hand

Well its not avin it , had a 24 hr soak in wd 40 , tried the allen key method still not budging .
next step a bit of exploratory dismantling i reckon , kinda leave the chuck there and remove the drill from around it

either that or a bit of surgery with a thin disc on the grinder

i think i should look for a parts diagram first !

this could take a while good job its my back up drill .

mind you my main one has a bent output shaft so the chuck wobbles about 3mm , a new bare drill is only £75 w/o batteries /charger seems a bargain really (18 volt milwaukee combi )

Can you not cut say a 10mm allen key into a 10mm hex bar by cutting the "L" off the end. Put the hex bar in the drill chuck.Clamp hex in a vice and try reversing the driill off the chuck.
You could go one better and put a 10mm socket onto an impact gun set the impact gun to undo and the drill into reverse trying to shock the threads into releasing

I Like your thinking drivewasher , your first suggestion definatly wont work its only a 14.4 volt drill not enought power .
ill try the impact wrench tho got a choice of three , 12v first , then 14.4 , then if all else fails the big mo fo 18 volt 350 nm

im not about to butcher my best 10mm allen key , im sure i can find a old rusty one somewhere

ill try and give it a go tonight ( prepare for striped gears and a written off AEG )

Open the chuck as wide as it will go and look down the end, there's usually a left hand thread Philips or Allen screw down there which undoes and you pull the chuck off the shaft.

If you read the thread properly ped , the l/h sscrew is out , well thats ok then ill just give the chuck a little pull .

next you will be telling us the shaft has a keyway
