Chromebox updating.

I stupidly thought this would be a simple task.
I have a chromebox (which I was given a a PC) but it's fairly old so not a high spec.
However all I need to do is to be able to run vysor https://www.vysor.io/ remotely.
I can then control a firestick so my Dad can watch a bit of sport. Since my mum died he has become very lonely despite the family rallying round.

Biggest problem is he struggles badly with tech and at 87 he is not able to remember anything much let alone new things.

Anyway I read up about chromebox and as they run Chrome OS vysor won't run on them. It will run on Linux, Android or Windows.

So a dilemma.....I have decided not to bother with windows (yet) as many on here love Linux, so thought go with the flow.

I found a few videos about upgrading the CN60 Chromebox and one links to this SSD m.2 ngff ssd but I can't find it on the link. (Link is a year old) but I found one that "seems" to fit a chromebox and is cheap enough.


But I really don't understand what the designations mean. Plus I don't know how to work out what's in my chromebox.
Any suggestions?

Have you had a look on the Crucial website they have a good product finder. You might be able to put in the Chromebook and it will suggest compatible upgrades.

Seems like it's the most basic version.
Intel celeron with 16gig of SSD.

I am going to see if I can run a version of Linux of USB stick before I start buying stuff.

Unless others have a better idea.

I found out the specs of it by typing chrome://system in the browser.

Celeron doesn't always mean terrible these days.
This is a celeron branded CPU and is very capable, it's an Atom cpu really

I see but there are two higher species versions I had hoped it might be.

It's all a bit strange as they seem to have take the lid off, to install a different OS. But I am not sure why.
I even found a video that does not require the lid off.

It's worth a go, it doesn't need to be that fast if it's just being a remote control....

Yeah I agree....so I gave it a go.
But...I knew what would happen they have changed github (I hate it with a passion) and I can no longer find the link he refers to.

Approx 2 mins in if anyone knows how to find it

I managed to install it. It's now running teamviewer on Ubuntu controlling a fire stick.

Strange I managed to get all of that installed and running. Yet I cant work out how to reboot Ubuntu or bring up a command box now...lol

Ok so I manged to reboot...BUT sadly I can't get croutons or ubuntu to run upon starting.

I know I know I am trying to learn a bit about Linux inside a chrome OS which makes me hate them both but I am almost there.

If only I can turn on the Chrome box and get it to start Crouton/Ubuntu.
Any Linux guys got any suggestions please??

Solved a lot more bur can't get Team viewer Daemon to run now.

I can start team viewer but it says the daemon has not loaded. Tried allsorts not but I can't even find out how to install teamviewer...lol
