Anyone had one of these DIY powersweeping kits? Or something similar...?


Got bored of trying to find a sweep last week... cant come for 6 weeks.... that'll be £75.....thats the ones that answer the phone.

Pretty simple one to do, bungalow, so fairly short, virtually straight up, flue liner with log burner at the bottom.

I bought a brush and some polypropylene rods from Argos for about £11 and they do the job fine, you can use them for drains as well. I gaffer tape a sheet over the hearth and mantelpiece then vacuum after, job done. It usually takes about an hour.

If you need to rotate the brush in the flue, turn it clockwise so the screwed joints tighten up.

Dad decided to to save some money by sweeping our chimney, he managed to unscrew the brush in the flue. We had to get a builder to knock a hole in the chimney breast to rescue it. At the time me and my brother were too big to get up the chimney.

I've been sweeping my own chimneys for over 40 yrs [just finished sweeping all 3 as I type!]& like your Dad I once lost my brush off the end[a lot of yrs ago] all I did was put a drain claw on the end & tied a paraffin soaked rag on the end, lit it & whacked it up the chimney as fast as I could,all of a sudden a round piece if wood fell down, the bristles burnt,don't know if it would work with plastic brushes,apparently I was told you are supposed to get a hetas approved sweep in to do it but stuff that if I can't manage now I never will, I sweep the rayburn every month,the stoves twice a yr.

I can tell you that would've worked fine, I swept my chimney without letting the flue cool down, brush felt strangely ineffective, when it came down it had the look and limpness of a wet floor mop, :-(

I sweep my own chimney, but this year I'm going to get a sweep in as the company I've bought my new wood burner off pointed out that without a cert. From a sweep my house insurance won't cover me if I have a fire. Insurance companies can wriggle out of the smallest loophole

An old bloke I worked with years ago used to swear by the bantam brush for his chimneys. You tie a brick to their feet and drop them down from the top. I'm sure he was only kidding though.
