I can see the chemicals working in a sink trap, can`t see how they can possibly work in a backed up sewer pipe. A litre or even gallons of the stuff would be diluted to virtually nothing in the grand scheme of things. The 4" rubber disc on the poo sticks has always worked for me.

Rubber disks are OK on straight pipe, but they are very easy to get caught on branches, when pulling them back.
I had my drains jet washed a couple of years ago, I knew the only way to sort out the problem was to isolate a length of unused pipe and reposition the vent stack, but as a short term fix get them jet washed, also wondered what the circle of mortar in the concrete path was covering.
Well I found out, as I managed to pick the same person as the last owner used to clear the drains, except that cheap skate would not pay for jetwashing only for rodding.

The guy was ex Anglian Water and knew the area (got a load of info about the local system from him - saved me a lot of money later on when dealing with Anglia Water, when there drains were backing up, but a story for another time). He admitted that he had used the rubber disk expecting to be able to unscrew it from the other end (in the access chamber), but found there were 2 bends preventing it reaching the access chamber, so had to pull it back, only it to get caught on the branch - had to drill into the branch to lever it back with a screwdriver. As he had agreed the price before starting it was a lot of work for very little money.

The drains are to long with 2 small awkwardly placed access chambers before the oblong one to use rods roughly 150 feet, my small jetwash drain snake will clear any minor blockage.

A guy I worked with told us he had a tiny cupboard toilet, too small to use he said. He removed and sealed up to use it as a proper storage cupboard.
6 months later he has problems with his upstairs loo and gets a plunger. It fixed the unflushing loo, but popped the seal off the unused one. Hallway, lounge and kitchen flooded in faeces he took 2 weeks off work to clean it up.

The building I worked in last had problems, 6 floors of with cubicle toilets. When one flushed the others would gurgle or back up.
