Story in my local paper, only happened about 5 miles form me.

no idea of the actual details so can only go by what is in the story but a nasty and avoidable accident by the looks of it

talk about bad luck he pegged it later on from some other illness

Scary. I don't how many blokes know about em , but Air Liquide (and now Linde as well I think) are doing bottles with integral regs. The theory is, every time you change the bottle, you get a checked and serviced reg set.
I'm thinking of going over to em at some point, but don't know enough about them at the moment.

Every time you change your cylinder, you get a new set of gauges that misread in a different way you mean surely?
This is the same air liquide that keep giving me checked argon cylinders with spindle leaks and wont shut off once cracked & when I take them back the next day the depot refused to change them. That's bit me 3 times on refils now.

Goes to show that those things really are consumable.
Tightwads hanging on to them for decades because they "look" ok and don't want to shell out £50 every 5 years are putting that £50 value on there own body parts clearly.
I have a done a few gas inspectors courses and if that report doesn't open eyes the course will.

Is it not basic safety to not put your face in front of the regulator when you open it?

I dont know anyone who ducks or turns away when opening the bottle/regulator. I guess most of us simply put trust that is't a working piece of equipment without giving a second thought that it could pop - myself included.

Ive heard your supposed to keep your self to one side when cracking it open but that's not much use when you are then setting the pressure. It's more basic practice to shut them down properly, keep them clean. And throw them away when damaged or expired.

Understood, just passing on air liquide's rep behaviour at my local depot. The main depot is ok to deal with. I've seen those bottles with regs built into them in the racks when I've been picking up refils at the bigger depot.

It would concern me to see the rep at my depot, makes me think owas might have a point, my Linde gas comes from a pro welding suppliers that deals in welding stuff only, the Air Liquide place is a builders merchants supplying all tools to all men.
I can see the scope for bottles being mishandled .Think I'll stay with Linde

Standard practice with scuba equipment. Face the gauge away from you when you open the valve. It's common sense really.

they were called bottle keys when I was a lad, the story had me confused as well when it said spanner, as the bottles over here have no key, its a hand valve in a protective collar.

they are over here aswell, a mistake I think
