Cheater lens

Was making a Christmas tree holder today. I wear varifocals and use a parweld xr838h helmet, today even with extra light I struggled to see what’s I was doing. Bit the bullet and bought a cheater lens, hoping I can see the weld pool clearer now.

I bought one a few months ago. I expected greater magnification but all it does is allow me to get closer and still focus, which essentially makes things look bigger. I think I should have gone for one a bit stronger.

I’ve gone for a 2 x mag, if it doesn’t do I’ll get another stronger one

I think mine was 1.5x

I use a +3 it means I have all the my varifocal glasses in reserve, and I am not tipping my head

Mrs TF and I have numerous pairs of +1 and +1.5 'ready reader' spectacles (cheap, Amazon) scattering around the house and I've used them when welding too!

I'm short sighted and tried cheater lenses, turned out I just needed to take my glasses off to see the weld pool clearly (without a cheater lens)

I tried without my glasses on, thankfully I have a grinder

The source of good strong readers went with Wilco going bust! Broke mine yesterday, superglue & epoxy.

Have a look on Amazon, you can get up to 3.5. I've just bought some sunglasses with the same value as my prescription driving glasses and they are excellent.

Well it finally arrived today. Got it fitted and went for a play with the stick welder. It makes a huge difference, I can now be 2 foot from the weld and I can see things very clearly

I thought I was managing fine with my varifocals but after today with the cheater lens in, I wasn’t and don’t think I ever did. Things have never been so clear

I probably need to change my 1.5x out for stronger mag' ......time moves on. 2.5x maybe.
