Car body panels are one of the main uses. Less heat, less distortion. I'll just give it a go on some sheet metal I reckon.

It's an approved repair for fancy modern (Boron) structural steels on vehicles. Or it is if you do it properly...

I shall be interested to see how you get on with that. It says on the web site “flux needed” I didn’t think you needed it for mig brazing, perhaps clarification needed, I know there is someone on here that uses it, is it premmington? There are a couple of things family have asked me to do & I’ve thought brazing would be better.

That makes sense - I've only used it once - in class - and I seem to recall tutor may have mentioned body panels. It struck me as particularly easy to weld with for some reason.

I saw the flux thing too. Think that might be a mistake by some Web minion. Who knows? I think @HughF is the resident expert. Premmington does tig brazing, maybe he does mig brazing too?

I've never used a flux.

My Kemppi has a synergetic setup for mig braze.

@Pigeon_Droppings2 What does the setting change over dip transfer? Higher volts and lower wire speed is presuming to keep the amps low? Is the polarity opposite to conventional mig also?
It’s something I’d like to try but haven’t got any practical use for really… but I’m well catered for with tig brazing should I need it.

Do you use 0.8mm wire? I was wondering if that was a bit small and why it was being sold cheap. Don't suppose your welder displays the voltage and wire feed on those synergic settings, does it?

They mention torch (gas) brazing in the listing, that's going to need flux although MIG (or TIG) shouldn't.

I think there's a lot of cut and paste going on in that listing. The picture shows a MIG wire roll. The composition CuSi3Mn1 is the same as other MIG brazes as SIF MIG 968, so I hope I am on safe ground. Gas rods don't usually come on a roll do they?

CuSi is what I use in 0.8mm...on the Kemppi it auto sets for me.

I've used it on mild for door bottom lip repairs...it's more forgiving I find if the steel isn't totally rust free.

Used it on stainless and also on galvanised...I tend to use it when I'm not sure what the bits being welded are made of....just handy to have in the cupboard.

The stainless was a radiator connector with a branch...it flows well...6 years and that connector is still working fine. I choose to braze as it was a 20mm main pipe and an 8mm 90 degree branch...was worried a stainless weld would just block up the branch.

Mig brazing body panels

Hi there I'm looking for some advice. Have some welding to do on my rear quarter which I'm obviously going to have to grind flush for a clean repair. Iv been using a 151te Mig welder with 0.6 regular wire and c02 for gas, my problem seems to come when grinding the welds flush as the weld is very...

To paraphrase Hugh. You can use a transformer welder.

I have a Portamig 235 which was marketed as brazing capable due to the low end power settings. Possibly just marketing BS. There's a lot of it about where welders are concerned.

I've also got a Paton inverter that will go down to 15 volts so I hope I'm covered.

It'll work fine in any mig as far as I know...the synergetic is just easier to setup.

It's handy to have a roll for those odd repair requests I think. I also keep a small roll of Ali and stainless in the cupboard too just in case.

All that a synergic mig does is adjust all the settings for you with one twist of a knob.
You can do the same with any mig you just have to set it all up manually.
In theory a synergic should make it quicker but you still have to set up the correct synergic program first.
I expect an experianced welder who knows what they are doing could setup a traditional mig quicker than I could setup a synergic set!

Soem of the fancy migs have features that are useful for brazing, ie you can create a very flat bead which needs less finishing, pulse features that give virtually no panel distortion etc etc.. but I've seen plenty of skilled welders do far better jobs with old/basic kit than I can do with a high end machine.

Modern synergic machines are advised for brazing because the auto manufacturers can then provide the repair shops with the pre qualified WPS and settings (on a usb key) for the vehicle in question. ‘Need to weld the chassis rail back in on a 2018 Honda, use program number 17 for welds marked A and program 23 for welds marked B’ for example.
