An idea came to me while looking at some acrows I have. A Workshop Press.
The inner legs could be used as uprights welded to a base. Cut a section from the outer sleeve and drill holes to suit, welded to a UJ would give you a table with another UJ for the top and mount for the jack.
1 short Acrow will take 1700kg in compression (at full extension 1.8m), and as steel is always stronger in tension than Compression, using one or even better two each side, you could build a very cheap press capable of 8ton+
