cheap to insure v8

Think out of the box (no tittering please!) Moto Guzzi made a nice 500cc V8 a few years ago, stuff that in an Isetta bubble car and you get the noise, excusivity and WOW factor. Handling might be challenging, but who drives their cars to their limits in this age...?

yeah, when we moved here we were in a rush, 2 months till baby was due and living in a 3rd floor council flat surrounded by druggies and thieves. council were less than useless, claimed they could put us on a transfer list but we should expect a 2 year wait. not good enough really. as it happened my grandfather had unfortunately passed away, but had left me some money so we pretty much walked into the first estate agents we saw in town, saw this house just up the road form where my grandparents lived, and on the estate I grew up, viewed it the next day, put a deposit down 2 hours later and moved in a week later. it was all very rushed but they only thing we were concerned about was getting out of the flat and into somewhere quiet. then the walrus moved in next door and its starting to get back to how it was in the flat.

this time I have looked at just over 80 houses in various locations on right move and zoopla, checked the streets out on street view, looked through the local council boards for anti social behaiviour complaints in each area, and text a few people that live close to certain areas and I have 6 potentials to visit, however from the photos alone, the house with the concealed drive meets all our criteria, is available immediately and I know 3 lads in work that have all replied to my texts and said its a very quite area, no teenagers roaming around, mostly elderly people and young parents like myself so seems a good bet. will be arranging all the viewings for this week (as I have nothing else to do, except maybe start packing all my tools into portable containers) and see what it looks like in person

ah but that is what the 12x8 shed will be for...sound proofing from the noise. it is a semi detached and laid out so that the garden and drive are on one side of the house, not front and back. so there would be an entire 3 bed house between me and the neighbours when im making noise.

My sheds 12x8 too,
Plywood cladding, 2x3 framing, rockwool inbetween, plasterboard and skimmed ..
You can barely hear the angle grinder standing right outside it let alone in any of the neighbours houses ..

i shall be borrowing that design then lol, i would like to be able to work later than i can now, but with having to do my cutting in the garden its difficult to be quiet

Im not sure if I would recommend the ply cladding for the exterior though, was always unsure about using it due to it delaminating but price and security wise it just seemed a better option than t&g and lap panels.
Only time will tell if it holds up, but 15 quid to replace a panel isnt much , could just clad it using lap ones over the top to make it look better

Could use the soundblock plasterboard stuff instead of the fireline stuff I used, not sure how much better it would be though. My door is also a sealed upvc one.

I still never work past 8 though just in case , more so because a complaint would probably mean knocking the shed down lol.

If we're still interested in V8's then Corvettes past the early 90's can cracking 25 with ease. I run a manual 1995 coupe, got 29mpg average to Holland and back last month. Not bad for 5700cc.

The C5's can crack 30's. If you're using the go you can expect it to drop, but not eye wateringly, 19 for enthusiastic short runs.

Yes it can go round corners, insurance is cheap and they don't rot. LHD oonly though.

you mentioned hot rodding, why does it have to START with a v8? In my shed at the moment is a nova kitcar (originally a rubbish swingaxle vw beetke rebdy kit) with a midmounted rover v8 in a esprit based chassis, and a ford pop situp and beg, also getting the rover v8 treatment. Both efi with megasquirt controls. I just like listening to the happy burble mostly, its not the answer for ultimate power or cheap tuning capabilities. The middy has a renault box, so your also not limited to a certain gearbox combo either. You can buy off the shelf adapters if needs be, although this gets pricey.
If I were starting afresh, I would pick the 1uzfe (lexus) motor as a base as its all alloy like the rover but has dohc and is vastly improved design wise, but as it is, the rover is a period mod done back in the day with both of my cars really and I have a few spare good engines coated in oil in a storage shed too.
This is the spirit of hot rods isnt it? Take the shape you want, the format you want and fit the bits you want.

Also under new dvla rules, its getting harder to build, but a few people are taking advantage of the rebody scheme to rework range rovers with the v8 but change ride height and body shell etc, keeping the original engine and enough parts to keep the original identity under the scheme while still ending up with some really tasty cars.
After that you have to look at biva etc to stay 100% legal, but thats a topic for a hotrod site, with more informed people guiding you.

Nova - cool - I had one of those back in the day, rebuilt it onto a non rotten VW chassis. Hydraulic roof/doors, got a lot of attention at parties. It was 1300cc Beetle powered...

Years ago when I was in the motor trade, I had a beavertail Mk1 Transit with a 3.0 V6 in it. It had a diesel front end, and the exhaust was just a pair of straight through pipes with cherry bombs on the end. They finished just behind the doors. It still had the original ratio diff, so it was amazingly torquey, but would only do about 50 flat out.

I had an Alfasud on the back one day, and a trailer with a Granada on it, and it would still out accelerate most cars away from the lights! Reversing the trailer could be done at idle, and it used to make a lovely burbling sound, a little bit like an old boat! Happy memories - I really miss the old banger racing days!

The Chrysler Crossfire was built in Germany based on a Mercedes platform, the SRT-6 had a supercharged 3.2 ltr AMG V6. I always thought the styling made the Crossfire a Marmite car.

I used to run an Opel Manta as a daily driver with a standard spec SD1 V8 & 5 speed, only mods were a 4bbl holley 390 & Edelbrock manifold plus homemade headers. The fuel consumption was no worse than the original 2ltr around town and better on a run, best achieved was 33mpg cruising at speeds up to 90.

350 small or 383 stroker will get 30 on a cruise, not blown though......you blow anything and its dropping usually

My dad owned an ex police Rover 827 v6, and when he nailed it I used to get tingles. A mate of mine owns a series 1 truck cab v8 with straight through exhaust which you can hear coming a mile off. Both equally sexy sounds IMOIMO

Not like when we built a mid engined jobby from scratch in the 70s. Local plod came round, said That's nice, where is the chassis plate? We showed him and he signed it off. Friend still hill climbs it now, but in those days it was (still now, technically) street legal. Not that we had any problems, but I can understand the concern for oversight in this age.
