I knew a chap who tried to 'borrow' from work....he ended up behind bars [mind you, we did work in Banks!]

On the cheap tools thing, I bought a pair of big screwdrivers [new] at a market in Englandshire maaaany years ago for £1 each, been used [and abused ] over the years and both are still going strong - no makers name, but it goes to show that cheap isn't necessarily rubbish.

Usually I think cheap = rubbish and generally I am proved right.

However... some things... set of 1/2" Am-tech deep sockets I bought 10 years ago at a market, used with breaker bars and 900+ ft-lb impact guns, never broke, very little sign of rounding/wear. They still sit in my toolbox next to the Facom and older Britool sockets and i have no intention of upgrading them to a brand name, as I have done with nearly all my other cheap tools at some point.

Also a corded hammer drill from Lidl - the chuck is garbage and needs two stilsons to tighten, but I've done an awful lot of drilling, wire brushing and polishing with it!

B&Q power pro circular saw. The sole plate is made of slices of processed cheese but the saw itself is brilliant. Can’t cut a nice 90 degree cut because of the flimsy base but brilliant for ripping up scrap.
I promise myself something decent when it dies but it refuses to give up and as it’s one of the first tools I bought when I got my first house it must be knocking on twenty years old now.

I've picked up loads of bargains at my local car boots. You've got to get there early!

This weekend I picked up a brand new router (Can't remember the brand, nothing to write home about) for a tenner - in a box with some bits too. Dead handy if I ever need one!

I reguarly pick up G-Clamps for around a quid a piece, can never have too many of those! Spanners and sockets appear from time to time at anything from 20p each to 50p, have quite a collection now!

We also buy a lot of Lego at them, can be cheap sometimes!

I bought a set of surface drive sockets on ebay some years back - couldn't swear to how much but they weren't expensive. They were new but didn't have any packaging.

They are absolutely brilliant, they're marked metric but being surface drive there's some tolerance and the nearest one will happily spin an imperial nut or bolt with far more force than you would expect. They are branded Chapel and I've never seen or heard of the name before or since. The logo looks like it's been laser cut into them as it's yellow/brown in the matt silver finish.

Best thing about car boots, is everything is negotiable. The seller wanted £15 originally and I countered with a tenner. My missus hates my haggling!

That said, I've been on the other end of this, selling a glass table a guy bartered me down to £20. Took the frame away to put in his car first then came back to try and get his money back as it didn't fit! Told him that I wasn't in the business of giving refunds and he needed to figure it out himself! Never came back for the glass top...

Ive got a PowerDevil sliding compound mitre saw.....first one Id ever seen......dont recall how much it was but it must be 15 years old.....still going strong and same blade
I also bought a PowerDevil 12v battery drill....that too lasted years.....in fact, it outlasted a Bosch I bought the same day just in case the other was crap......I used both on a boat refit we did...the Bosch actually might have done more hours than the PD

I have to say my lidl corded kango/ hammer drill was a great buy.
£40 about 4 years ago and it has done some serious work in that time both by me, my da, brother and the numerous "friends" that have asked to borrow it.

I'm still using a Power Devil jigsaw I bought....I'm ashamed to say how long I've had it. Iirc, they were from B&Q originally?

I got mine from Makro.....so you know how long ago that is....they havent sold tools in living memory

It’s a pity that, over the years, I’ve had some good stuff from Makro. Since Booker took over I’ve not bothered to keep the card up, a shadow of its former self!

The local one does excellent meat and fish....Im not sure if its the cheapest but the quality is good....bought some cod loin the other day £14 / Kg.........they supply many restaurants in the area
