most of mine have been done in while on my wood working jig where iv got powerd feed and hitting dence grain in the wood and may be its some think to do with using them for an hour at a time with out stopping thay dont like that.
i wouldnt dream of puting a hilti on it only cheep grinders at the mo iv got a jcb 9" on there and it just keeps on going its very noisy but indestrctable

Same here. All Makita.

one is proline, been a great grinder,

other is parkside, cheap £20 grinder. but variable speed ,3 year warranty, you cant complain.
could do with another.

got to use a makita one last month.

the switch on it was a pain. so hard to get it to turn on.
it broke in the end, i wasn't impressed,

i have a belt sander and four 18v cordless all makita
all been great...
so to see that happen to the guy's grinder,

i was a little wow its broke and thats a makita grinder.

We use metabo at work, doesn't get any better, quality is fantastic, price is less so...

I have used really cheap power/battery tools and it's not a "no brainer" it's just buying junk. You might get lucky and get a bit of life out of her you might not. I used to just buy Bosch blue but recently bought one of the hitachi screw fix deals and that's a proper way to save money. Discounts on reputable equipment.

We use metabo at work, doesn't get any better, quality is fantastic, price is less so...

I bought a 5" Metabo 1400 watt a few years back after my two Aldi grinders died within a fortnight of each other (6 years old though). The Metabo was about £90 but it is rock solid and has a clutch so you can't lock the disc and burn it out and NVR on off switch for safety feature.

Metabo also has the lowest HAVS in the industry, doesn't matter for tinkering in ones shed however is a big deal with the hse taliban just now !

Never had any issues with our Makita grinders, and we have 4 - the oldest is about 15 years old and still runs smoother and quieter than most new BnQ/Aldi, etc specials...
Think the smaller 2 cost about £30 at the time, so not exactly breaking the bank compared to the cheap ones anyway.

Ah, funny how we can all have different experiences...

I had a JCB 9". Not a lot needs to be said about it really, it wasn't very old when it decided to demonstrate its ability to out-smoke the average smoke bomb.

Bosch? Had one where the gearbox died after no time at all.
Challange - didn't last.

I think there's more but they aren't sticking in the memory too well. I can't remember ever having one last long enough to need the replacement brushes often supplied.
As well as the actual quality there can be a big difference in usability. I remember going from a Metabo to a Draper. Noisy, rough, stiff power cable (which actually frayed and needed replacing) and basically not nice to use. It works and hasn't died yet, but I wouldn't really choose it.

i had to replace the brushes on the jcb spent ages trying to find them on the net with no luck then thought about looking in the case to see if it came with spairs and found them

Just reserved one, thanks. At that price it's a no-brainer and although I've already got 2 grinders, it'll be handy to have a cutting disc in one, a grinding wheel in one and a flap disc in the other.

Note to self: no more grinders.....

Hmmmm......So you need to swap things over if you need a wire brush?

Had Bosch, Dewalt, Metabo, Makita, and various cheapies. The only ones still working today are Makita.

I have always used makita, I have two on the go at the moment. I had a brand new spare I'd stashed away, when I damaged the flex of one of them, I got the new one out and to my surprise it was duff. Makes a horrid noise and only turns slowly. I have no idea what has happened to the receipt so I dismantled it and started swapping bits over - it seems to be a problem with the gubbins in the body as the spinny bit works fine in the other one. Ended up making one out of two but still suprised that it was a duffer from new.

Yea and it's OK. Has been my only mini grinder for over 8 years. Have had to replace a bearing recently and now needs new brushes. I particularly like the quick adjust guard clamp and sturdy locking button

Am tempted to get another from screwfix £35. But swayed by the reduced price erbauer £25.

I had a Bosch blue pack up on me a while back and needed one there and then so ended up in B and Q ( I think) and bought a Stanley Fatmax 4.5".
Gotta say, is a great bit of kit. Nice and quiet and has put up with a fair bit of work with just the occasional wipe down and blow out with air house to keep it clean.
Iirc it cost about 40 squids so hardly a bank breaker.

I've got one and they are ok, sometimes on offer at Screwfix. Our fabricator in my last place had one and it stood up to serious abuse before he finally killed it.

The Makita he replaced it with didn't last half as long.

I also got the hitachi one that Richard mentions above, that seems equally well built and if anything a bit slimmer/lighter.

I think any of the decent names are equally well built to be honest, with almost any tool like this there are bound to be "early" failures and ones that seem to run and run....

A foundry I worked at used swing grinders to surface grind ingots before they went to rolling mill in Sheffield. They didn't look like that for long and the lads who operated them wore a lot more clothes than that
