cheap garage heater

i have been sorting the garage out atm bult a table out of my old bed and made a box for my compresor out of some kitchen work surface and under lay and carpet. drops the sound about 60% well worth makeing one

need to install a extractor fan with a filter as i have moaning neighbors
but cash is a bit tight atm so that can wate

but a nother cheap project i was thinking of makeing was a log burner with a water jacket so that i could put in a old radiator in the garage as its a cheep way of heating and iv got **** loads of wood to burn as well

but i dont no anying a bout water jackets or how to plum them in or wether i would need to wire a pump in or a tank any help would grate

You would need a feed and expansion tank located higher than the highest point on the system. This would tee into the flow or return pipe. It would be best to fit a pump but wire it through a pipe thermostat so that the pump only runs when the flow temperature is high enough. All the parts are available cheaply from any plumbers merchants

just been thinking about it and it would need to have a open bit on it as it would buld up 2much pressure so if i installed a tank with a open top like so would that be ok ?

Instead of a water jacket you could make a copper coil round the boiler which would be easier to make water tight.

I've been collecting bits for something along these lines.

I've made a gas bottle wood/coal burner, collected a free rad from freecycle and bought a central heating pump locally on ebay for a fiver.

I'm just waiting for the weather to break and the cold evenings to draw in

I'm undecided as to how I'm gonna make the heat exchanger, but I'd prefer if it was removable, so I could run the stove without if I wanted to.

why do you want a radiator in the garage when you could just put the wood burner in there will produce loads more heat then a radiator

well im going to just make a wood burner for naw but in the long run i might adapt it to run a radiator as well as i could have it one side of the room so there would be a fire one side and a radiator the other side

just a single car one one of them prefab garages just concrete panels bolted together with a really thin roof so it will loose heat really easy

Sorry to jump onto your thread guys but is there a drawing available online to make a gas bottle wood burner ive never seen one and quite like the idea of making my own for my garage.

Yea i can see the picture but i dont know how they work etc, I was looking for dimensions for actually making it all work correctly.

i would make the burner and try it before going to loads of trouble i had a small burner that warmed up the garage fine
mine has a flat corrugated steel roof insulated with rockwool and boarded stops the drips in winter and keeps the heat in

if you just copy the 1 in the picture you will be ok inbetween the 2 doors is a grate and obviously on the top the flu the top door should be as air tight as you can make it and the door at the botton allows or restricts the air supply so that you can control the burn

my garage is brick built with tile roof no insulation and it gets warm in there and a garage door at both ends.I use the garage as my workshop so the car never goes in.

I know the gas bottle burner will never be as good as a proper wood burner but i get most of my wood for free so im not to worried about how much wood i burn.Even though its not to bad.
I built a hot plate into mine so i can make a brew.But if you also do the same use a kettle with a full flat bottom and not one of those gas kettles or camping kettle as they have a rim around the bottom so the whole base of the kettle does not touch the hotplate and the heat transfere is poor.either use a pan or a kettle that has a very flat bottom
