Why is UK 240V and US 110v?
The answer lies in the history of electrical power generation. When electric power was first being pioneered, there were two main players – Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla. The two men had different approaches to power generation – Edison favoured 110V DC current, while Tesla worked with 240V AC current.
If its a one off I'd go for one of the cheaper ones there going to last that longI like Makita tools so that is a "maybe" despite being more than i want to pay. Suppose I could always sell after I've done the garden sleeper work to recoup some of the outlay.
I think mains UK is 240V, 230-250 allowed. I'm very close to a substation here and we never see less than ~246V.
