Time is all one got plenty ofI don't know. How much is your time worth?
I don't question the value of a dro , rather if mine has more value over a cheaper one.

Why, what does that digit do? Constantly flicker or change??
I don't know. How much is your time worth? I try not to make scrap and I am very busy. Over the last couple of years I have installed a new DRO to the lathe and replaced the read heads on the Mill. I have used magnetic read heads and they are far better than the glass scales. In my opinion.
Piece of Insulting Tape over the digit?

I didn't know they could be had so cheap! I'll have to look into this.
I bought mine off cbr on ebay. I wanted the sinpo because the mills at work have them and they have really lasted.
Optical scales have higher resolution than magnetic scales but more sensitive to chips and coolant. Optical operates with a photo sensor sensor that reads etched markings on glass.
Magnetic uses a hall effect sensor that don't need to "see" the scale making them less sensitive

Possibly, but 5 microns is usually sensitive enough for most everything I do, one micron sensitivity, much the same as common glass scales are readily available: https://www.machine-dro.co.uk/magnetic-linear-encoder-reading-head-1-micron-resolution.html
One micron is a bit of overkill though really and just not a practical dimension in a busy jobbing workshop.
In practical terms, what this means to me is a very low profile magnetic strip on the cross slide and a small 40mm x 10mm x 12mm read head. A word away from a bulky glass scale. I will get a pic.
You also have to take into account the accuracy, when I was enquiring about a scale to put on my CNC Lathe the glass scales were quite a bit more accurate than the magnetic ones. If I recall I was quoted +/- 15µm for the magnetic as opposed to +/-5µm for the glass scales.
I don't suppose he would be based in the UK?
All the cheap stuff comes from China/miles away doesn't it.
The equipment is in Nottingham, but when you contact or order anything, you are dealing with someone (very helpful) in China.

Maybe I should start a poll, which are the most popular, optical or magnetic ones?
