Cheap diy car port build advice please

Hi looking for some advice on building a wooden frame around my car and cover with tarpaulin for winter protection while not in use . I need an idea on thickness of timber etc for the frame . I only want to build it so the front and rear of car with be exposed . When frame is built I will cover with tarpaulin .

I think one side will be higher than the other to allow the for rain fall ? will I need to use obs board for the roof or can i get away without ?

They do stand up to some bad weather and would look tidy.

Yes it looks ok but space it tight as its only a small drive that the car is on.

Is this to be fixed to the floor?
your biggest problem will be wind,if its has to be timber it'll need so much bracing,theres also the problem tying/fixing it down,you said you want both ends open you get a good wind underneath that it'll rip it apart.
How about chatting to some scaffold guys see if they could knock something up cheap for you,even then i'd still want more weights at the bottom

Yes I was thinking of fixing it to the floor ..Did not think about both ends creating a tunnel of wind and the result of it taking off..

You could always modify to suit the size.

if you build the frame work and put braces across the floor so you can park all the car wheels on the frame that should help with keeping the port from not taking off, also keep the cover away from the car so as it does not touch the bodywork, saves repairing paint work damage through cover flapping against the car in the wind

That is a good idea and the hole idea of this was to keep cover off the car so it can bread and not rust out..

Very good idea but do not have money funds and want my car on my land so I can turn it over from time to time etc..

I bought on Wednesday an ex wd container parachute or part of it anyway guy sells them for £15 he has one out side his shop just tied up with cord and has been there for months in horrendous weather and wind with no damage whatsoever they are 22x 12 ft rectangle they are edged with thick webbing on three sides the other is just raw edge where it was attached to the container they would be ideal to form roof and sides the only thing is they are green, being a parachute material they are made to stand a bit of wind, but are also waterproof.

When I was a kid we used to have a couple of old parachutes. Use post WWII for making underwear etc. Is that your intention ?

Hi, what about using a secondhand gazebo with side screens? End of the season coming up so people will be getting rid of them. Suitably secured to the drive they should be alright.

Have still not made my mind up but have found this corrugated sheet from wicks sheet size 660mmx3000mm length of car is 3m600 and its £8.39 a sheet can do roof and sides ..Just unsure on timber thickness for the frame ?

Ive used the corrugated sheeting from wickes on my carport, I've used 4x4 treated posts for support, 6x2 beams for the sides and 4x2 peices for the supports under the sheeting. I think the sheeting was 0.7 or 0.8mm thick,which is a bit thin and thicker grades are available. it does have a limited life expectancy though as it will go brittle over the years. the easiest way to cut it was using a air powered cut off tool.
