Why not just buy a decent quality one in the first place ??? They are not axactly expensive

I totally agree, you can get Gedore made in Germany with tool steel Chrome-Molybdenum-Vanadium air hardening Steel 45CrMov7 ones for about £6. They are properly hardened and tempered.

A punch out of a turret punch. Once its too short to work efficiently in the machine, grind it up into a centre punch.
Will make a centre mark 5-6mm diameter no bother if you leather it with a 48oz hammer.Perfect for starting a mag drill on.

Blimey, I'd say that's really pushing your luck. I would consider them all too hard to safely hit with a hammer, there's no way I would do that without re-tempering unless they were made from mickey mouse steel.

so do i...and when im in desperate need of a centre punch to accurately mark a hole position and cant find the one i bought i will use what i have to hand

Concrete pins, which are fired out of a powder actuated tool (such as a Hilti) are excellent for use as a centre punch;

Ive still got the centre punches I have bought...I just don't want to spend too much time looking around if I can't find them, would rather just use something else and get on with the job

By the time you have annealed and straightened a car spring , then shaped it ,then hardened and tempered it,then ground it you would have used more in energy costs than the price of a good quality punch anyway,save your time and money to make something more worthwhile, thats only my thoughts,

I find old coil springs make great punches

I tried that once.

The hammer came back and hit me in the face.

The best wood chisels I ever made came from a old cart leaf spring. Ok, it took a bit off work to shape, harden and temper them.
But for working oak they were un beatable.
