I totally agree, you can get Gedore made in Germany with tool steel Chrome-Molybdenum-Vanadium air hardening Steel 45CrMov7 ones for about £6. They are properly hardened and tempered.Why not just buy a decent quality one in the first place ??? They are not axactly expensive

X2++++Blimey, I'd say that's really pushing your luck. I would consider them all too hard to safely hit with a hammer, there's no way I would do that without re-tempering unless they were made from mickey mouse steel.
Where's the fun in that?
The fun is in having a proper tool that won't hurt you, for what it costs for a decent one I couldn't be bothered as prefer to get on with the job in hand
so do i...and when im in desperate need of a centre punch to accurately mark a hole position and cant find the one i bought i will use what i have to hand

I find old coil springs make great punches
