Just to get back at the little debate with Malcolm and RBT:
RBTComp already mentioned that money represents the value of “something”.
Determining the value of something is incredibly difficult, as in most cases you need to know the future, which is unknown and uncertain.
The communists tried determining values, but weren’t very good at it. In our capitalist system we leave it to the market, where a bunch of clueless experts (I like the term, Storm Monkey) do it, but in my opinion don’t really know what they are doing.
Another important thing is that some incredibly important things don’t have a price, such as clean air, a bug that transforms waste into fertiliser and so on. These things are easily ignored or forgotten in an economic analysis. Thank goodness Al Gore and the like put it back into the debate.

French and German small and medium size diesels are streets ahead of even the Japanese.........although Honda have joined in now. Those particulate figures are an excuse for tax burdens in UK. The govt aint gonna let you have 45mpg and reduced tax on diesel. Is anyone old enough to remember when diesel was a lot cheaper than petrol?

Yes.

One firm I worked for remunerated our mileage at so much per mile depending on engine size. I drove a Landrover with Perkins 4203 in it (3.3 litres) so I was on the top wack, unfortunately we had to furnish receipts for the fuel, which meant I had to buy more diesel than I used. The excess was stored in an old central heating tank, I was still using this reserve a year after I left the company!

I am sorry if someone has already made this point as I didn't read all of the replys, only the first couple of pages.

But the fear this car will increase world pollution, is mainly because of its such a cheap price that it will be accessible to a huge part of India's population. They estimate it could put another 300-400 million cars on the road in India alone!

so what's the alternative? Force them to keep using bicycles so we can all keep driving our cars?

We moved forward to almost everyone owning a car from the 1960's, why can't they?

I remember as a young lad collecting car numbers in the street and having to walk 50 yards or more to the next car...that same street now is jammed solid with cars both sides of the road almost 24 hours a day. There's no-where for a new arrival to park and it's the same for 20 streets in either direction.

Now that people have got used to cheap, personal transport there's nothing much that can be done.

This talk of man killing the planet is tosh...arrogance beyond reason, man will probably never have the capability to destroy the planet.

We can, and do, alter it, possibly not for the better.

But 'nature' will win eventually. If half or 3/4 of the worlds population dies as a result then that's the way it has to be. We'll go back to a population that the earth can sustain.

And if every human dies (unlikely) then some animals, probably insects, will take over.

So don't worry, do what you want, if things get bad we'll adapt.

Global warming is just an excuse for scientists to get huge grants from various governments for swanning around the world to huge conferences, and for those same governments to rip us off with additional taxes.

The climate IS getting milder, my own memory tells me that.

However governments are using it as a cash cow. If traffic pollution (for example) was a problem why not ration fuel by the litre, rather than to those who can afford it?

If for arguments sake we burn 100 million litres of petrol a week, ration the market to 75 million and you've cut traffic polltion by 25%

Same with houses. Promote off-peak half-price electricity and you'll save pollution from power stations, but that would reduce the tax-take.

Considering there are 100mill people in india, that means 1 car for every 2.5 people. May I say "********" ? (apparently not . Cahones then )

300 million cars, 100 million people is 3 cars per person!

Also bear in mind they'll replace loads of scooters, which are 2-stroke, so the cars may actually cause less pollution.

I have no idea what the current estimate of number of existing vehicles is.
