Cheap bar off cuts near swindon

I recently bought a lathe, got it all sorted and ready for making chips but where I normally get my metal from doesn't have any bar off cuts at the moment so does anyone know any where close to Swindon that does bar off cuts?

I have always found that a finding the local metal recyclers (industrial type scrap yards) and explaining your requirements proves worthwhile, have they often have a shed for "useful bits" for model engineering types.

ive tried the ones in Swindon but they all say the same thing, they're hands are tied there not allowed to sell anything

I think Monday I'll have a little drive around the different engineering firms in the area and see if they've got any

I bought a 2mt length of Alu bar 2 inch diameter for about 30 quid posted on eBay. You'll have to hunt and search through all the rip off metal merchants selling 200mm lengths mind. Cut small bits of and turn them to swarf. That's cheap enough if you ask me. Lasts ages for practice and Alu is lovely to practice turning too.

I've got some coming from eBay but not quite as cheap as that. was looking for a variety of sizes and materials

I noticed there were a lot of offcuts if every description for sale at the Bristol Model Engineering show when I was there yesterday.

I noticed that but I wiped out the cash I had on other stuff and there was no cash point on site, it was one of those sellers I've got some coming from next week

If you have any metal fabricators near you, ask the Foreman if OK for you to go skip-dipping, that's where I get mine because carriage is a killer up here.

Obviously you get no control over what's in the skip, and a donation to the tea fund helps in future.

If you've been going to the local councils cycling centre, you've been wasting your time, but Ive never heard of a true scrapman that doesn't sell metal?.....

I was tempted to go back but the time you take fuel and entry into account there would be no saving whatsoever

Not the council ones but biggish ones the small one band types will sell stuff and they've got my number if things come up but they told me not to hold my breath
