So, as my practice with my new Portamig seems to be going well, my thoughts turn to the first real job in hand.
I had some welding done on my old Series2 Land Rover a few months ago, but was never happy with the results - and the fabricated bracket was a hack job at best. Anyhow, I've got the chassis all supported, and finally got to cut the old weld out back to good metal.
Basically, there needs to be a repair to the side and bottom of the chassis box section. The previous repair was a hammer bent piece of 1.5mm steel welding side and bottom with the 3mm bracket welded onto the 1.5mm once it was in place.
What I'm thinking is to use 2.5mm steel (about what the original chassis was), butt welded. I would weld the bottom of the box section first in one piece. As the bottom opening section is shorter than the side section my thinking is that this could be welded from inside of the box section - Much easier than welding upside down is my thinking - also easy to check penetration etc.
Then, for the side section, again I would butt weld based on a template for the remaining side opening.
Once this is done, I could then weld the V shaped bracket to the side of the newly repaired section.
Here's some photo's to show what I mean.
Advice very welcome.
Photo shows the bottom section not cut out yet.
