Chassis Painting

Im cleaning my Landrover chassis and waiting for a few parts to start welding , so i may as well look into the best possible chassis paint options. Theres alot out there but many have problems with chipping and general resistance so has anyone any usefull tips on different coats and paints . THANKS

Hi Rob
Have you the chassis compleatly striped of all components
Cab, body, springs, etc. etc.
If so send it down to galco in waterford to galv coat it

With etch or red oxide, Bonda primer etc, and chassis black, you see any damage and fix it easily and it's quite cheap.
Did mine with 2k epoxy and topcoat, no waxes.
Series chassis mostly easy enough to get around for a look now & then to spot chips etc. Can fix stuff before its too late. Heard of someone putting 8-9 coats of this 'n that outside, nothing inside... thick enough to hide the rot till too late.

POR15 is OK but brittle, costly, needs topcoats, wants rusted or rough surface to cling on to.

They mostly rot from the inside, so that wants something. The guy that bought mine swore by a mix of linseed and engine oil, not tried it though.

Yes Johnny all stripped , not to keen about galvanizing as it may twist and twixt where old thinner stuff repaired to new thicker stuff , but there are many parts that were originally galvanized that i would like to be redone but think parts may be have to be specially cleaned to be redone ( dont know just heard it somewhere)

Hi Chipper was thinking of waxoiling inside, although i like the sound of the linseed , will see what others have got to say Thanks ...........

'orrible job eh Rob Nice workspace, room to swing some good-size cats... Fella reckoned I think 60-70% linseed, and engine oil, that kept the linseed from setting and drying. No idea how good it is though.

I just waxoyl the inside and clean the outside to bare metal and spray with waxoyl. Nothing to chip. I patched my Lightweight chassis 10 years ago and sprayed it with waxoyl and it still looks good. I leave them till the weather has been hot and dry for a few weeks, rig a hoover to suck the dirt out of the chassis if I can and I drill 20mm access holes if needed to make sure I get it all.

Anywhere that does galvanising should do the acid dipping as well or they will be shipping stuff all over the place and waiting for it to come back.
