ever used a scotchbrite wheel ,,, its like a flap disc except you still have steel left to weld ,,, well worth the cost on older stuff

Thanks for that, I might be being a bit naive here but was thinking of just taking measurements rather than building a jig -

You don't need to go over the top...just take a scrap square of steel and bolt it to the top mount hole. Then use some scrap steel to link the plate to a couple of bolt holes on the body. It's only for location ...so even a couple of m6 body locating hole is fine.

It removes the risk of fitting the new part and finding there's slop so a range of potential positions that could be right!

Also means there's zero doubt it went back in the correct position.

Think before you do anything. You only have “one” chance at it.

Agree with making a jig.
And/or. Sake of argument, buy two “shelf brackets “, than can be cut identical, bolted to the rotted part and drop into a bolt hole.

Then the replacement, use other “shelf bracket” so that drops in same bolt place.

One of my Minis, I spent an hour marking where to cut donor out. Marker pen, left it two days to recheck. Sun faded the marker to nothing! Still need to redo it!

Personally would get flapper disc and clean up the replacement part, then regroup

they just strip the paint and leave all the steel intact , I never ever clean things off with flap discs , I find they thin everything down too much , and you end up with less than you started with , unless your doing good thick chassis work or the likes the results are not great ,,, again you mention that your magic marker vanishes ,,, try drilling a few small holes say 2mm for alignment , they are alway there even after cleaning and dressing , painting primer and the likes ,,,, even the broken edge of a cutting disc will work better than a marker and theres always one of those to hand ,,, an automatic center punch can be a handy tool to keep at hand too ,,,

Same here...I use a twisted wire wheel in the grinder for heavy paint/under seal. For lighter work i use a wire cup brush in a (rubbish) drill.

Flap discs I use for roughly knocking back welds...but I finish off with a b&d finger file.

It was easy to do as you suggested, the back of the floor pan and the inner sill are at right angles so used a piece of square steel and located a 19mm hole in the chassis leg, drilled and matched to that... will be a good fall back / reassurance check at least!!

For example post #42 by pidgeon droppings, Instead of scrap metal, buy “something “ that is factory made, so if “something happens “, to your holding piece, it is no problem.

no , seriously dont go out of your way ,, I probably just didnt get quite what you meant ,,, look after your health though , especially with the cold winds about , keep warm and healthy .
