Charity at checkout?

I was in a shop at lunchtime today here in NI. Small town Mace shop. When paying for my lunch the card reader asked Yes or No if I wanted to donate 20p to Action Cancer.

Has anyone else seen this in shops? Its a pretty good idea and I hope they raise plently from it. I figure like 20p should encourage smaller more regular contributions.

First time ive seen it other than in Screwfix's online checkout which asks for final £ to be rounded up for charity.

Me and wifey - only make one largish charity donation per year. As directors we do it from a Ltd company we have (and the accountant in @Craig-SM knows it does lower Corporation Tax).

We have never given to the same charity twice - we always choose a local one in our town.

I/we make one donation a year - and then not anything to anyone/anything - not a single penny till the next year. On good years we give more - on poorer years we give less. But I/we only give once a year...

Giving to charity is about what you can afford - I personally have benefited from the input of a charity in my early years - so "giving back" is something I feel I should do - I got older and have more money about me. No I am not on my death going to leave my whole estate to "a cats home or the RNLI" and deprive my spawn of there inheritance - but I will give once a year to local charity that I have seen doing something good.

God forbid you or a loved one should ever need the support of a charity organisation.

Yes my loved one DOES need charity help but doesn't get much support from any of them. They just cant work out that she has stage iv cancer but is still trying to work and can't make it during business hours!
Sadly many charities are run for the benefit of the staff first and the people who need it 2nd. The bigger they are the worse they are. BUT in fairness they still do vital work - just vanishing returns. I would rather give it directly to someone in need.
There is an animal rescue charity in Wales who I wont name but I had a feeling for a while they were very much business first. They get loads of volunteers and do treat the animals well but they are always pleading poverty. They had some damage done in a storm and were begging for help. They didn't treat us very well when we tried to rehome 2 dogs. I looked them up on the charity commission website. Cash at bank £1.5 million! They don't have to disclose director or trustee wages if they are less than perhaps £100k each - so naturally the whole family have jobs there.
They are now under police and charity commission investigation.
I do still give to charity of course. But if I won the lottery - or my ai takes off - I would much rather offer direct help to people who really need it.

I pay cash for everything, and no one's had the brass neck to ask me for a cash donation to anything
That said, if I get change with any annoying coppers involved I'll usually say 'bung the odd pennies in your charity tin'

That sounds exactly like me. I knew there had to be one person out there that still uses cash.

As long as you comply with the legislation which includes keeping records that prove it’s a U.K. charity so will need the charity number.

There are quite a few in garages and the like around here I've noticed, and the door knockers come round every now and then to give the direct debit spiel. They all get the same answer "I only donate to animal charities.".

Never sign up to direct debits or give your telephone number to charities. They will pester you to keep increasing the amounts or extra donations. There was a Panorama type program on how the call centres targeted people and they’d have hit lists based on charities they’d donate to so another call handler could target them as they were all earning commissions. It highlighted cases were the elderly were targeted until they couldn’t feed themselves as they’d given so much away to “charity”

That's quite sad. I signed up to give £10 a month to the air ambulance and no one has ever contacted me to up the amount.
I get a monthly email update on what they have spent the money on. I have been giving to them for three years now.

Charities? Middle class welfare for their own staff in many cases. It's often no longer the voluntary sector. People are well compensated.

i give a couple of charities of my choice .go in toolstation and when you put your card number in it says do you want to give to charity yes or no and the guy asks you which i say no i already give elsewhere i deffo dont give to charities that say give 20 or 30 quid you might get old age pensioners that would have possibly given a fiver that they can hardly afford but now dont
