Trouble is I have no need of a split charge relay so I can't see the need to fork out £35.

They switch off automatically, it's only because my current setup is back feeding them.Not trying to be sarky or clever but teach yourself on van switch off to switch the radio and fan off too. A sort of full shut down technique. In the bad old days when batteries were expensive and you got the last ounce of energy out of them you ensured everything was off last thing. Then in the morning when it is freezing and you turned the key you had all the energy to turn the starter and not all the ancillaries too. Its simple, cheap and works!!
I think what he is saying is the circuit that runs them shuts down with the ign and the cig lighter is on that circuit so when switched off the spare battery is keeping that circuit live.So there are no selector switches say for the fan to set the speed say, everything is automatic. Unusual I have not seen that on a car before.
There are all types and ideas of systems on campervans, some work some dont work so well but as the main battery doesnt get properly charged anyway, in 70% of vehicles, (you are lucky to get 80% charge in main battery ) the second battery will mostly suffer worse than that.I was under the impression thst the leisute battery in a campervan or caravan ran a different circuit to the vehicle's.
Maplins did a small, all encased split charging kit for about £30.
I have help friends wire them into his caravan towing vehicles.
