Yes and you can see half backed people and things on both shows, i am a self taught carpenter and had to stop watching it, if you can find a show called Canada@s worst handyman it will make you cringe,

Don't bother, it wasn't worth watching when it was on the first time. Several hours of your life saved.

I could have told you who would win from the first episode. The dusky lad was the one who actually deserved it because his quality and attention to detail was good and you can't have that quality with excessive speed. I will not be giving my views on the winner, it would give the snowflakes a total meltdown, what with their tolerance for free speech and all that.

Theres a series on Netflix same standard format about glassblowing, unusually it has some very skilled contestants and is very watchable, I think it’s called blown away.
obviously someone who actually knows something about glassblowing will turn up here in a minute and point out they were all rubbish

I have been watching that and it's actually reasonably good with some very talented people

Not seen the show but can imagine what it is like. I find youtube has a better selection of skilled craftspeople. For carpentry for example newyorkshireworkshop produces some of the finest carpentry related content on youtube. This table he made shows just the level of attention to detail and skill of someone truly passionate about what they do.

Some of the people have done some really nice stuff, but what you have to consider is they are in a cold tent, not their own tools and the timing is quite tight, I dont think I would like to be told I have 12 hours to build a cabinet, 6 on the trot one day and 6 the next and not have my own tools or my own kettle (priorities)

To be in those type of programmes the participants usually have to be a short term member of the actors union .. the TU wallahs would close it down if it were too cold for the union reps let alone the participants . Me I'd put a HASAW stop order on such shows until the safety angles were sorted and safe.

I watched half of one episode of the carpentry one - I’m not a huge telly person anyway but this was shockingly bad. The contestants were pretty awful but the judges were so far up their own RS’s it was unreal!!

I can find a redeeming feature in most things but this was truly dire

RTE (our version of the BBC) made this series, "Hands" back in the 70's (The last decent programmes they made ) . I would imagine most of the people shown are now dead, or in other work.

Personally, I only watch comedy shows like “money for nothing”, “find it, fix it, flog it”, die laughing every episode.

I find such programmes real skin crawlers .
I'm 106 % safety every so when I see twits cutting towards their other hand my hair stands on end , people using a 12 " hacksaw one handed with their other hand holding the bit being close to the cut cut or using chisels & screw drivers onehanded I cringe .
As soon as I see some one using a Stanley knife cutting things across their knees has the same effect. These yorp & squawk yank progs like the car & motorbike chopping set , Forged in Fire & other televised for the idiots programmes that don't use blade guards , filter masks , have little or no safety in their methods are also gut churners to me.

I often find that the more tools & crap on the work bench there is usually indicates a poorly organised and sloppy operator .

Plenty of the mechanic progs on TV are also really shy on tool savvy & safety .


Question when using an off set open jaw spanner which way should the off set be to tighten the nut & why ? Pictures welcome ..you've only got a 50 % chance of being wrong .

The offset spanner would depend of if its a left or right hand thread
