I suspect that it wasn't stirred properly, Ive seen this before with paint that has been stored for a while, you need to use a flat stirrer and work it down to the bottom of the can to lift the settled pigments, a round stirrer wont do it.i bought 5l of "maroon" cellulose paint yesterday but the colour it actually was was bright pink, so i added some black and it is now a purpley colour so my question is - how can i get it red?

yes, as above, settled out...
but also paint sometimes dries a different colour to what it looks like in the tin.
