Changing from Apple to Samsung?

Would never go back to Android, been using Apple the last 4 year, using a XS Max now

My old man asked me to look at his android a few weeks back, “something keeps popping up”, it had popup malware on the phones home screen....what a load of crap. Never had to second guess iphones security.

Todate I have never had to reset a iPhone, it was a once a week job with my android phone but each to his own

Had enough of my iPhone slowing down and being unresponsive and it’s time for a new phone,as this is the second one to go this way I’m looking at a Samsung

Will I hate it? I’ve had iPhones since it was just an iPhone so never really used anything else smartphone wise

I’m not a complete Luddite and I don’t need or want the latest thing, I just need it to work

I have been working with Apple products since day 1, made a living out of it and I even worked at Apple for a time.

I suspect the only thing you will really miss is the integration with other Apple products. The thing that tecchy guys hate and consumers love is that they are "sandboxed". Nothing gets in or gets out without it satisfying the technical requirements dictated by Apple. So if you have a Mac desktop, laptop, iPad and iPhone they all work seamlessly together. The downside is that it is more difficult to "break out" of that closed loop if you want to do something other than the Apple way.

So if you want to take all your photos into a 3rd party application and manage them outside from the Apple environment, it's not something Apple just let you do unthinking. Yu will need to find your own method for storing, managing and backing up your pictures. Contrast that with using say "Photos" app where any photo on any of your devices will appear everywhere on all your devices even if you edit them. Same thing with your contacts data or your music. It's all managed "in house" and generally speaking, it is a seamless experience and it all just works as you would expect.

If/when things don't work that's where it gets interesting because that usually points to a fault rather than misuse or misconfiguration. Nothing is perfect so there will always be problems popping up with tech. The upside with Apple is they have Apple stores where you can get your unmolested devices fixed for free. Since I used to also fix Apple stuff, that's a huge benefit for the user, massively adds value to the product and is a disaster for a freelance consultant.

But iTunes for music management or playback (I find) is pretty terrible. So you might want to use something else. Good luck with that because once you step outside the sandbox, you're playing by yourself and things can get very complicated very quickly. Same goes for media management, data management, photos and movies.

So the iPhone/Apple solution is, in my opinion, an all or nothing option. It only makes sense if you buy into the Apple/Mac workflow in your whole digital environment but if you do, it really does make very good sense indeed.

That sums it up for me. I have never bought into it fully so perhaps that's why I hate it so much. I am not too techy, but the restrictions because they are sandboxed really annoys me - that's why i find it so annoying that there are no current jailbreaks. Android lets you do all of this as it is an open platform, but the compromise is a lower level of security I suppose.

I can't figure out why noone has ever managed to develop an alternative OS for Apple products (like Linux on a PC) that will save those machines like my iPad2 from becoming obselete because Apple make them so...

The only Apple product I've ever owned was an early iPod. I quickly replaced the OS with something that wasn't trying to control my life. I didn't get a smart phone until about 6 years ago, I couldn't understand why I'd want one. My first was a Samsung S4 followed by an S6 and now an S8 Edge. Yes, there were some annoyances with earlier flavours of Android, and the hardware wasn't perfect, but the camera resolution is awesome and I've had zero problems with the new phone. I am techie, so happy to play. Given an iPhone my first action would be to bin it.

Apples level of obsessive control seems to be getting worse as well - they effectively continually spam your machine with popups if you choose not to upgrade - its not like you can turn the reminder off!

Never once in 4 years have I ever had a pop up on my phone or Mac, all i get is a number one on the setting icon

They don't do that deal at the moment and they change on an almost weekly basis.

I switched my father on to it yesterday - but you have to phone and talk someone in to putting you on it, their best deals are never on the Website and it depends who you talk to what they are willing to do. Vodafone have a similar deal through mobiles.co.uk (although you have to keep on applying for cashback over a 12 month contract) that works out at £7.99, point it out to them and they will find a deal.

Also my package does not include the extra 500mb for having their broadband, so you should be able to get 5.5GB

Perhaps popup was the wrong term - at the moment, i get constamt reminders about ‘two factor authentication’ and an available ios upgrade. I want to ignore them, not have them top of the list of reminders above my emails etc when i wake up each day.

I'll look into that. Nothing comes close to their prices for the amount of data and I have to say whenever I've rang Plusnet I have always got through to someone immediately and they always know what they doing which is refreshing in this day and age.

It is a good idea to set up‘the two factor authentication stops people getting to your phone if they know your password, also it must be in your best interest to keep every operating system up to date with the latest version. Just my opinion

I have been given a works Samsung

And I hate it with a passion but that said I only vaguely tolerate my iPhone

Hi,
I'm on sim only with Virgin, they've recently upgraded the infrastructure so there's a lot less reliance on EEs network and it's a lot better for it.
Phone wise a Lenovo P2 I've had for 2 years no problem with it and battery is still going 2 days between charges. The power saver switch on the side can stretch battery life a lot further, I've put that to good use living off grid for the last 6 weeks.

It's not 1 big thing, just lots of little things I prefer. Most apps I use often just seem better to me

I know exactly what you mean. My Samsung S4 Tab arrived a few weeks ago and its pretty slick. Plus I can load the apps I want as opoosed to the ones Apple say I cam use again!

An interesting side note, the NHS supply their staff with android phones which are set up with a VPN (Virtual Private Network) to enable staff to access NHS resources. Some of the staff prefer to use their personal Apple phones which the NHS Trust will allow so long as they sign a privacy agreement, what is only just coming to light is that staff who signed this agreement failed to notice that if they leave the Trust the Trust will remotely wipe their phone to remove any possibility of confidential information being extracted, that's the entire contents of the phone being defaulted to factory settings!

That would probably be NHS England, NHS Wales devolves this to the local HB (this is the equivalent an English NHS Trust) so policy varies. We support both Apple and Android phones whether corporate or personal.

Yes we wipe but data is containerised so we only wipe corporate data and apps on personal phones

Been a long time Android user, prior to That I had a HTC HD2 running Windows Mobile 6.5 with HTC skin over the top and absolutely loved it. Kept going with it long after everyone stopped supporting apps for the OS and only moved to Android after inadvertently driving over the HTC.

Initially had a Samsung S3 and hated it, the Samsung UI was awful so switched to Sony as much prefer the more native Android interface.

Needs change, been running dual SIM phones last 4 years, initially a Sony C5 Ultra and now a Huawei Mate 9.

Wife and daughter have Samsung and I still don't like the UI however not as much as I dislike Apple tho
