Changing a 3 phase motor for a single phase

Hello electricians , Is it possible to change a 3 phase machine for a single phase machine , we have a wood working 3 phase machine and would like to install a single phase motor instead.

I've done it on a pillar drill without problems. The obvious points are physically fitting it in the space/brackets &c, direction of rotation and shaft diameter.

The HP is also a consideration, you'll need to supply more current than the current per phase on the three phase.

Yes, subject to wiring capacity (1ph needs thicker wires) and you need to up power a bit, 25%?

One thing I would say is fit a slightly bigger hp single phase motor than the 3 ph one it’s replaceing I know 1 hp is 1 hp regardless singelphase or 3 phase but with machenes that that have a lot of inertia or have to start under load single phase motors often struggle I found with augers ect a 1 hp single phase motor complains and has a short life compared to a 1 hp 3 phase fit a 1.5 hp and problems gone

How much does VFD cost? i have a meddings dril with a 3ph 1/2 hp gryphon motor on and i was looking to make it single phase.

Hello Every one, Thank you for your replies, we have a 9" Multico Planer thicknesser and would like a 12" thicknesser and been offered one but its 3 phase , we only have single phase , with no chance to install 3 phase in our workshop. What is VSD Anguz and what is VFD Olderisbetter. but it sounds as if we can change the motor to single phase and I see we would need to have a single phase motor a bit more powerful also make sure it has higher revs. I don't now how powerful the 12" thicknesser is yet . A few thicknesses have two motors, one for the feed, and one for the knives.

Check it's not one of these, as that would get more complex...

You could also use a static or rotary phase convertor. But a vfd or vsd are cheaper

Something to ask about or look out for as its a woodworking machine it may be a braked motor or have a DC injection unit to slow the cutter block in under 10 seconds. Both are more costly to implement with single phase motors. Unless it's a vfd unit with a external braking resistor, this can often be added as a option.
