Thats one big bore piece of cheap vynil tubing on your regulator and it looks like theres a good length of it too!
every time you pull the thing apart to change something a lot of air is going to be in the system. Untill its purged, may be just enough oxygen is in that pipe to upset the balance of the shielding gas for a while, or some of the fume is still coming off that pipe( just smell a new bit pipe they give off that "taint" for a while)
perhaps now that you have stopped pulling it apart its all purged and working better( 'cause the original welds didnt seem to be suffering that much)

I noticed this today. I switched from Co2 to Argoshield and the flow is no where near as much as it was with Co2...I got much better welds using Co2 so i might go back....
