Does anyone know if you can buy re-cover kits for these high back dining chairs. I got these from Freecycle - frames are good but the fake leather stuff is all cracked. There are plenty of 'slip covers' out there but I reckon they will slip around and look rubbish fairly quickly. What I cant find is a back and base set (i.e. two seperate items that can replace the current covers on the existing frames - any ideas? They arent worth spending much on but didnt really want to add to landfill...

Might be possible to refurb the leather/fake leather with a repair kit - you sand it down, fill the cracks, re stain it - but the cost might not be worth it.

You can but the vinyl on a roll cheap enough and you might get away with it as two peices without stiching, if you get the stretch type. Ideally you need to be competent as sewing machine to stick sections together.

Its the sewing machine bit that I probably wont be good at. I bought a machine a while back with this sort of thing in mind. I probably need to just get on and give it a go really.
I would be happy with a nice fabric - it doesnt need to be the fake leather vinyl stuff.

Haha - all the ebay ones I can find are one piece slip covers and not quite what I was looking for. Were the replacements your parents got two pieces?
I was looking at the seat last night and I think this could work if I have some sort of suitable tacks to finish the backs off.
These need to look good as they are going in a holiday cottage. I would use them as is in my own kitchen!

To be honest I think you might struggle to get a good result doing it yourself, and it might cost more than you think. I have done a bit of chair reupholstering but only where you pull it tight and tack or staple it, and only fairly straightforward sewing. Those seats and backs have side panels so your cutting and sewing would have to be very accurate. The leather will be coated to be hard-wearing so any faux leather you use will likely be softer and not 'sit' quite the same.
A quick look on ebay suggests they are very, very cheap to buy. Are they all knackered? Could you disassemble them and put the good seats with the good backs to make a set of 4 decent ones?

I feel you might be able to staple bun the seat base and do the back the same but have to make a cover panel to screw on the back if that makes sense? Could be done with no machine too.

Thats a good idea - if the back had a solid wood panel that would be really easy. Or even hardboard that is covered in fabric and attached with attractive screws.
