A friend of mine bought an old farm and there were quite a few dead trees lying around, so he cut them up for firewood. The Council called round and accused him of felling them, even though they were obviously dead and partly sunk into the ground.

It actually went to Court and he pleaded guilty to cutting them up but not cutting them down. The Magistrate gave the Council a right r********g and he got a nice letter of apology from them! Luckily his neighbour was a solicitor and a close friend a tree surgeon acted as an expert witness.

I lost a fair bit of shooting ground after the guy felled about 20 trees with preservation orders on, fc were brought in to manage the land it's a shame too as it was absolutely wick with rabbit

I think it's a urban myth that you can get done if someone slips where you've cleared snow, unless you do something daft like wash it away with a hose on a freezing day. This was the view taken by a barrister interviewed on the radio.

The legal view is its 'unlikely' you'll be sued as long as you do it properly, ie use a shovel / brush and not a hose pipe to clear the snow and create black ice. It boils down to the claimant having to prove you were malicious or careless.
