Im a file too, but have seen it done with an angle grinder and thin disk. It wasn't pretty, but worked. The guy-has worked in Forestry 45 years…starting on the saw at 16 with the Commission.

They don't work like a file they cut on the down stroke so the wheel will cover multiple chain sizes. I use the Lidl sharpener on 3/8 and .325 and they cut well after a touch up. It was £20 new and they are still about the same price.

The cheap chainsaw grinders will work ok but you do need to be gentle with them, depth of grind needs to be checked or you will be cutting into the links and there is a tendency to take a bit too much off. if you go with one of these I would suggest getting that feel by practising on an old chain. I prefer the dremel type sharpeners.

had lidil type for over 15years...bought an extra blade......still in the box......

Wouldn't take long, its suprising how quick a fresh file will remove metal from a chain!
I have done exactly the same with the work saws - not cutting roots, but working in areas with rubbish and concrete etc.. hidden.
For roots, a recip saw does a reasonable job and the blades are much cheaper.
This looks like the cheapest and nastiest of the dremmel type tools..
Not strictly true.
I use 3 wheel sizes as my chains run from the smaller end to 404.
If I used the big wheel on the smaller one there would be no tooth left & the smaller one on the big chain would leave un ground bottom sections like U's.
You also can need different angles too.

What's not true ? Discs cut downwards onto the tooth whichever size you use whilst files cut sideways across the tooth so different file diameters are needed. The 3.2 disc supplied with the Lidl grinder does all my chains is all I said and the 30* lateral adjustment is the one I use and the disc tilt angle is fixed on cheap grinders. I set the drop so the disc doesn't cut into the gully using the depth stop. Your .404 is bigger than anything I have so I don't need 4.7mm discs or thicker.

ive got a cheapy off face book years ago done meny a chains with it
way i do it as not to kill the hardness of the chain quick tickkle with the sharpner and do it twice round the chain or 3 times if realy blunt as this gives it time to cool the tips
i do the same with chessels as well sharpen 3 at a time keeps the metal cool
