Chainsaw sharpener

I've ******** up a nearly new chain on the chainsaw cutting a root. It had grown round a rock. Its on the big saw and the chains are around £30 a pop.

Its salvageable but will take hours with a hand file.

Are any of the powered sharpeners any good? If so what do you reccomend? I will still normally use a hand file but a sharpener may come in handy every now and then.

(Ive ordered a couple more chains but would like to save this one too)

The neighborhood small engine shop has a Silvey sharpener, I know several tree people bring in their chains
instead of doing it themselves.

Why do you think it will take hours? Have you got the correct sized file for the chain, it takes me a couple of minutes per side on a 20 inch bar with a hand file

I've got a sharpener here. I no longer really use a chain saw much. If you're going past you can have it on a long term loan if you like.

I've damaged about 1/16" of each tooth on a 72 link chain that need shaving back that much each. I pushed harder when it wouldnt cut, then spotted the sparks. A normal sharpen is a couple of minutes as you say.

Ps to answer you question -

When I purchase mine, it was clear that a lot of places were selling the same thing with different stickers.

I suspect if you look up a Clarke sharpener, that's what mine is, but I can't remember if it's Clarke branded or some other company.

Only the front 16th of an inch. If I can grind back past that it will be fine. Theres a lot of meat on that chain!

If your doing much grinding, be very careful about overheating the edge.

Out of curiosity - is the grinding wheel thickness to match the file thickness? My chain needs a 5.5mm file diameter so would that then need a 5.5mm thick wheel?

I don’t have one but a friend has. He bought a cheap one and found it rubbish, then bought an Oregon one. You get what you pay for. As for me I still sort my chains with a file.
