using a file on a good chain they knack up real quick wasn't impressed with the last file I bought was supposed to be a good one as wellIf you can't use a file...
Seem to recall they need a chain to suit?

yep , but f you have an eye , and understand clearance angles etc you dont really need a guide at all ,, little and often ,, every third tank of fuel , two or three mins with a file makes a huge difference to what you get done in a day , and how much effort you have to put in ,,, its easier to rub up a blade than try to lever a blunt one through a branch .Eh, you do it by hand with these. They are a file holder and guide combined, make the job easier for folk that maybe don’t have the skill to do it without a guide.

well so I find , kinder on you and the saw , and far less likely to cause an accident too.
There are two "gadgets" that are worth trying but both take a little getting used to. The generic cheapy chain grinder and the small 12v hand grinder, these cheap chain grinders have a spindle/hinge that allows the wheel to float about like a cock in a sock and with anything other than a gentle hand will eat a chain, junk the bolt and fit some needle rollers in there and they would be good. The small 12v hand held grinders are good but again no good with a heavy hand, buy decent stones and go lightly and they last.
