And the drive cog.yep people used to ask to borrow mine . cutting tree roots out and cutting railway sleepers . yea it will cost you 90 quid though . wot for2 new chains and a cutter bar that your going to knack
I looked at making my own and genuinely it's not worthwhile unless you are running 1-2 types of chain and you are getting through them a really regular basis and I mean a few a week.
I just use https://www.chainsdirect.co.uk/ and buy Stihl or Oregon chains, all of our saws are Stihl.
Chains can last quite a while if you look after them and and don't stick them in the dirt all the time. In the last couple of year we have stock piled probably around 5-8 years worth of fire wood. We have some stored in builders bags and a lot air drying in the barns. I would imagine we probably the equivalent of 100+ builders bags of split logs and I think I put no more than a couple of chains on my MS261 in the last year or so.

Only ever know them as joining links, LS engineers or FR Jones are my go to for online oddsnsodds.

Yes I have got a chain tape/gauge, came in four bits and was glued down to a bit of Melamine.

They stretch then snap across the links, I had a batch of cheap ones from some company.
I have always been someone that would buy a tool or buy in bulk to save some money/have some fun/learn something but I can assure you even once you have got over the initial outlay it would take most people a very long time to make the savings worthwhile.
You'll be looking at £120 for an Oregon chain breaker and a rivet spinner, 100ft chain reels are £350 +

the acid test to see if the links are worn is lay the old chain on the deck sideways on and bend it in to an ark then put the new one next to it and the ark will be a lot less if they are worn on the old one. used to do it on bike chains
looked at it briefly (very) early on, and came to the conclusion just as quickly, wouldn't be viable for me / my business having to cover the range of sizes and in terms of liability. If a customer, for whatever reason, managed to snap one and get hurt, it's likely I'd get lumbered with the liability... I just buy them in prepared, that way no comebacks..

I use use a punch and anvil for joining chains, this type.
Haven't had any break just been to be careful to not over peen it.

I know, it was pretty expensive when I was cutting. I only used the girly 325 on saws then.
No they are longer due to wear.
I was more than even after doing one reel of chain.

I use whatever the saw runs. Most of mine are 3/8 but one runs .325. You need a big saw to pull .404 chain. Here's a good guide to different chain types..

Never ran 404 on a chainsaw, just harvesting heads.
Thanks for posting that. I'll print it out and use it when customers forget what size chain they need.

Used to but no longer, which is why the new Husky chains are not as good. I use Stihl and Panther chains and hand file unless I hit a bit of metal in woodI thought I'd read somewhere that Oregon actually make the husky chains.
any one know if this is correct ,
then I might grind back to size. As other have said keep it sharp, clean, oiled and out of the dirt and a good chain will last ages.
