Blade jumped off yesterday. How much deflection and how hard to pull it to check cold 14" blade

Tighten it so the guides on the back of the chain will not clear the groove in the bar when pulled up in the middle of the bar.

You want no slack or hang from the chain along the bottom run of the bar,it should just just slap back into place if pulled like a bow string,& yet still turn freely on its bar & sprockets.If you put the saw on the ground,(not a slippery table),you should be able to rotate the top run of chain towards the bar tip without dragging the saw along.
Check the oiler is working(point the bar tip at a log,rev the saw & you must see a spray line of oil hitting the log from a couple of inches.
Also check the chain is not tight when hot,though they normally go looser.

Make sure it's sharp too as a blunt chain will make you work it harder, giving more heat (looser) and wear the chain joints more quickly. Plus it satisfying having a super sharp chain sink like cheese through the logs

thanks all. i was a bit affraid of over tightening. It is a fairly new blade as the last one caught a bit of barbed wire that had been nailed to the tree in the past

Get your self a saw sharpening file, and get into the habit of lightly sharpening every few hours of cutting time. If you leave it too long not only is it hard work, but the chain will run hotter when blunt, expand and potentially come off. A slack chain is very dangerous.

good maintenace will save a nasty accident, the files are only 5 to 10squid with a guide so you cant go wrong!

Don't forget to check the depth on the guard link periodically when you sharpen the chain

I sharpen before every use but when it touched the barbed wire, it was not possible to hone it out.
