Having said that, there are probably thousands of mods every year that go by absolutely fine, but it only takes one oversight and an accident and the lawyers would have no hesitation in pointing the finger of blame at someone.

Assuming the motor drives a gearbox to drive the chain, put a clutch type coupling between the gearbox and the chain, if the chain jams the clutch slips.

My big Petrol saw has something like a clutch I know this because I blew it to bits cutting a big old Ash. The repairer couldn't believe it, in fact he cant believe some of the other stuff I have broken and thinks I should ask the manufacturer if they want a tester

For a non contact sensor, an ABS wheel sensor might be just the ticket. Relay in the power line with a momentary pushbutton to override for startup.

You might not like it so much when pointy metal bits fly out the side of your chainsaw and the likes it don't even give you time to make a mess of your underwear, you just get the cold feeling afterwards!

Ajlelectronics, that sounds interesting but i dont know how abs sensors work. Would you need the abs ecu involved?

An ABS sensor is a device that responds to magnetic flux. If you rotate a toothed wheel in front of it, you will get a simple pulse train from the sensor that corresponds with the "unevenness" of the rotating part. So in a car, the pulse train represents the teeth on the gear attached to the wheel. With your chain, I would think that the links would be able to be sensed going past. Very simple to use that pulse train to hold a relay or whatever you want to do with it.

You would not need an ABS control unit but would need some form of circuitry to switch a relay etc. An ABS sensor is normally an inductive proximity switch and there are many types available for industrial use.
