Today the posty delivered this little bundle.



So now I can make my own chains up.
Any more of you make your own loops?
Any tips?

I am sure I remember someone posting a link to a pdf file for measuring chain lengths to print out & glue to the table the kit is mounted on.
Tried to search for it but cant find it.

my friends imports a Chinese chain "peak" i think, i know the company makes some big boy brand chains they are pretty good

This is 404 it for my big processor.
My small processor uses 325 & my battery saw uses 3/8ths.

I have used the Rotatech cheap chains.
They are not bad but do stretch a lot.
Making my own means I can have a big brand for the same cost as pre made loops of cheap stuff.

When you make them, exercise the rivet by hand to make sure its free. You dont want a tight spot in the chain.

Cheap chains tend to mean you need to replace drive sprockets and bars more frequently. It’s all a trade off.

a few tips

make sure the tie straps are fitted with the notch to the inside of the loop ie towards the drive links otherwise it will ride up on the sprocket at the one link that is "upside down"

to create the loop after you have cut to length pick it up by one end only and let it hang vertical will eliminate the possibility of getting it crossed over or double looped

when riveting the tie strap a little lubrication on the spinner makes the anvil last longer and peens the rivet end over easier

lubricate the thrust bearing and spindle ( little hole in top of spinner frame)

when riveting over spin the handle fairly quickly whilst applying pressure slowly with the rear handle

dont rivet one side completely then do the second one, do a little on one then move to the other ensures the drive link is correctly positioned on the larger diameter dont over tighten the rivet its better to leave it loose and check then go again than create a tight link

I usually just count the drive links and mark the tie strap that needs breaking with a marker or chalk then count again


ensure that when breaking the chain off the roll care is needed placing the tie strap in the anvil ( its easy to bend a drive link )

Not had any come off, had a couple when I first started not moving freely. Toooo heavy handed with the hammer and punch! You soon learn

I had / have (?) a hard copy one somewhere. Long thin book if I remember rightly. They used to send out nice calendars as well with B&W logging photos on them.

I know in the dealers they have those table top measuring things but they usually count them anyway. I have always counted. I have also nipped the top of the rivet off with a grinder and punched the remainder out. Habit picked up from my buddy who's a stihl dealer!

Some sound advice above. Also worth allocating the space for the job and hang the various rolls of chain at the end of the bench on a pole, get some link measures glued down on some melamine ( conti) board, saves making mistakes when link counting/cutting.

Original punch, been ground a few times. Anvil is double sided takes 1/4 - 404 chains. Just need a solid flat surface to use it on.

It could be 30 years old. Handy bit of kit. It was always in my van, surprised it never got nicked. Got chains removed from my spare saws on a couple of occasions. Teeewats
