do the lower weight rated hoists have less reduction in the gears?

I hired a 2 ton silverline one....would have been better if it was faster. I've seen 250kg ones that would be plenty for me but will they likely raise/lower quicker than a 2 ton version?

it's not something I see mentioned in the product info in adverts

In theory the mechanical advantage has to be achieved somehow so you are probably correct. There would be more distance travelled of the control chain in relation to the lifting chain.

Personally I wouldn't buy any chain block below 500kg capacity.

Speed over effort, it's a trade-off. If you want it to rise/fall faster be prepared to put in more effort for the given weight. If you want it to be easier you have to suffer the slower speed.

I have both a 1 ton & a 2 ton chain winch & the 2 ton one is geared down more to make lifting easier.

Cheers...wasn’t sure if it was just the chain/hook strength that changes or if they're geared differently too

They're definitely geared differently for the capacities, you'd never lift a 3 ton load if it had the gearing of a 250kg hoist, its all to do with mechanical advantage.

The 500kg hoists are small enough, but the 250 kg capacities are like kids toys...

Tnx I found some “pulling effort required for max capacity”figures in your link......it’s not like a 2t needs double what a 1t does so makes sense the gears are different,

I only need to lift about 40kg and keep it in place...it’s big/awkward rather than heavy

The 2t I hired it was almost freewheeling?...was prob more effort than a lower rated one would have been with the amount of chain I had to pull
