Cebora Prof 52

Hi esteemed Welding gurus,



I have recently acquired a Cebora Prof 52 plasma cutter. My local welding merchant has supplied a load of consumables, I've wired up the earth clamp, etc.; but I'm concerned about the supply.

Now, I was taught that ye olde phases were red, yellow, blue with black neutral & yellow/green earth. And that the NEW code is brown grey black, blue neutral & yellow/green earth (quite which dimwit decided it would be clever to swap black & blue.....).

Out of the Cebora's wire, I have a blue, brown, black and yellow/green wires...

So; is that brown (L1), black (L2), blue (N) and E; or something else...?

I have a 4-pin system, so if blue is N, then I guess it should be tied to E in my plug?

It could also be an old continental colour scheme, the Cebora being Italian? i.e. Brown Black Blue as L1-3?

Thoughts anyone?

Sounds like to me you have a bit of control cable masquerading as power cable! take the cover off (unplugged!) and it should be quite easy to identify which the live cores need to be but as long as the earth goes to the case I would be surprised if the phase sequence mattered

I wasn't so much worried about the phase order (although it'd be nice to get it right), than I am wiring a phase to neutral or earth to phase... I don't know if the plasma is actually single phase + N + E, or 3-phase + E.

As you suggest, I will whip the cover off & have a look.

I've no idea how many hands this machine went through before I got it, it could well have "any old piece of wire" on it...

I had a Cebora Prof 35 3ph. On the front panel it had a switch for Off/ 220/380 that could be interlocked so it only selected one. But it was for 3ph at either voltage, no single phase. And the order was not important. A careful look at the wiring diag (printed on the case) explaines it. Or, as MK says, just look at the block inside.
Can't remember the colours now, but they were not standard.
Edit: Thinking a bit harder, they might have been blue brown black + E

At the time, with the 220 switch and the colours, I wondered if it would run off single. But no.
I have a welder that can run off single or two phase and has blue/brown/yellow. It feels odd to wire the blue to a live.

I've just taken the side off (13 screws! Those Italians sure didn't want you to open it up regularly)... and the voltage selector is hidden in a plastic bag (clearly not OEM)...

Mine has the choice of 415v or 440v, anyone know which I should choose for standard UK 3-phase? I'll test using 440, on the basis if it's getting less volts than that, it's less likely to blow up than if I overvolt it on 415....

It works

The 415v side of the switch won't engage, which I assume is a safety, and now I've got enough compressed air stored, it's working a treat

Slightly wobbly panel cuts, here I come

Great,result. but, if you dismantle the handle of the switch, then the interlock system is apparent. It was (on mine) a disc behind the plastic handle.
