Blue iris has a free or paid version.

Probably the biggest problem for normal home use is the 'direct to disc' function does not work on free version. Strangely it appears to work and checks the box but it doesn’t. This feature dramatically reduces CPU overhead.

I have to admit not using the free version for a while.

Iirc I just downloaded from the home page, you purchase a licence to activate the full version.

^^ That's the one I downloaded. 15 day trial, but if you uninstall it completely and re-install the trial period starts over again.

I'm getting used to Reolink's own software, once you realise that some of the screen shots in the manual don't relate to the real world it falls into place. I'm having a bit of an issue with the screen freezing though.

I've tried quite a few apps with this camera (Reolink RLC-420) but only the Reolink and Blue Iris apps work with it. It works in a web browser.

Reolink's got some nice features, email and recording on motion detect, you can define the area of the image to detect motion. It has a big shortcoming in that it won't replay videos unless they're recorded on an NVR, you need to use an external media player.

I installed the Android app on my tablet, it fired up with video as soon as I started it without having to configure it which was a bit scary.

I don’t remember a time limit, that maybe a newer 'feature' to raise uptake of the paid version?

The videos by this guy are helpful, I let my system just run now but I still find them helpful...

Hey @steviec_lj I just installed my first CCTV cameras, I can send you some nigh and day stills to show you. I paid £150 for each of my two cameras, I went for Dahua Starlight which is what most people recommend.

But I can't afford to install any more at that price so I've also just ordered one of these £40 Hikvision cameras to try for quality. So basically I'll have the Dahua's where it matters and the cheaper cameras elsewhere:

I'll post up some comparisons when I get the Hikvision installed.

One thing I'm being told though is that cameras that are good at night aren't as good during the day. So my Starlights are great at night but my mates Hikvisions, at half the price, are better during the day.

I have no experience with those cameras / that make... but I had some a bit like them.... and they were crap :-(
